Time Keepers. Heirs of Chronos. The play, red (Àííà Ãîëîâíèíà) / Ïðîçà.ðó (2024)

Prologue:
Everything has its time, and the time of every thing under the sky:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
time to plant, and time to pull out planted;
time to destroy, and time to build;
time to cry, and time to laugh;
time to lament, and time to dance;
It's time to throw stones, and it's time to collect stones;
a time to hug, and a time to shy away from hugs;
time to search, and time to lose;
time to save, and time to throw;
time to tear, and time to stitch;
a time to be silent, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
time for war, and time for peace.

Act 1. Strange Vision

... A long alley of the old park, grey sky and gusty wind rustling in the crowns of the trees. Two travellers get out of the car at huge ancient gates.

Adele: - Are you sure that it is a right address?
Vlad: - It was indicated in the guidebook. So, it must be here.

A middle-aged man in a grey jacket, whose black hair was pulled back in a ponytail, takes out his iPhone.

Vlad: - There is no signal here... I don't like all this...

Shivering, he looked back at his companion, looking for support, but she only snorted contemptuously.

Adele: - Vlad, what's wrong with you?

Approaching the gates, she pushes the gate, which opens easily.

Adele: - Come on, or are we going to get wet in the rain?

... The alley, all strewn with fallen leaves, led them to the lake, on the opposite bank of which stood an old mansion. The three-storey building, though slightly dilapidated over time, nevertheless retained its former grandeur and gloomy attractiveness.

Vlad: - You know, this city... Are you absolutely sure that we are in this century?
Adele: - Vlad, stop it! It's just such a day - fog, rain... What's so strange about that?
Vlad: - But I still feel uneasy. Do you remember those two sphinxes that we saw at the entrance to the city? And there's not a soul on the streets... I don't know what you think, but it all reminds me of the illustration for the movie Sleepy Hollow...
Adele: - Oh, stop it. But my advice to you is to stop reading Edgar Poe.
Vlad: - Exactly! The Usher House... I read it once.
Adele: - Vlad!

Climbing the marble steps to the porch, the young man knocks at the door. At first no one answered them, but then footsteps sounded outside the door...

Butler: - Who's there?
Adele: - We're from the agency. You should have been warned.

The door creaked open and they saw a man, a butler in appearance, who, wearing pince-nez, looked at the young people. Nodding, he motioned for them to follow him.

The butler: - Yes, we were warned... Come on, there's nothing to stand here.

... With some trepidation, the friends entered the Gothic vaults of the hallway. A large hall appeared before their eyes. A huge staircase led up, and four doors were located around the perimeter, which according to the caretaker of the house, there was a living room, a dining room, a library and servants' rooms. But friends were struck first of all by the decoration of the house: no frills, everything is designed in a strict ascetic style. Directly above the stairs was a huge, full-length window, curtained with heavy red curtains, and a twisted chandelier hung from the ceiling.

Vlad (walking down the hall and shaking his head): - Yes... does not inspire optimism. Don't you think that everything is somehow...
Adele: - Spooky. Yeah…

The returning butler informs that the rooms are ready and shows his friends to follow him. Climbing the stairs, they find themselves in a long corridor, into which the doors of the bedrooms open. It's cold, the spirit of emptiness and loneliness is felt everywhere. When asked about heating, the butler just shrugs his shoulders.

Butler: - This is your room, mademoiselle. And yours, young man, on the contrary...
Vlad: - I'm sorry, but there are, in general, three of us... Our friend should arrive by evening. His train was delayed...
Butler: - We took this into account. His room is one floor above...
Vlad: - What? But why...
Butler: - Are you not satisfied with something?
Vlad: - No, no... everything is fine.

Stunned friends go to their rooms. Opening the door of her bedroom, the young woman was speechless.

Adele: - Wow!

She sees a small room, all the decorations of which were: a four-poster bed, pair of high-backed chairs, a small carved table covered with a green tablecloth, a mahogany bedside table and couple of cabinets against the wall. The high window was curtained to the floor with snow-white tulle... With the onset of the evening, having settled down a little and rested from the road, the young people meet again in the living room. Fortunately, the caretaker had already managed to light the fireplace and the room became a little more cozy. In the kitchen they discover an old stove and now they are happily sitting in armchairs by the fire with cups of hot tea.

Vlad: - Well, how do you like it? It looks like a suitable entourage for our project?
Adele looks at a friend with a grin: - You mean quest? That's cool... In my opinion, this is exactly what we were looking for. Wait, our producer will arrive... He should like it.

Vlad: - I can't wait to get started. It looks like it will be great show!

Suddenly there is a knock on the door, followed by familiar stamped (like a military man, which, you will agree, is quite unusual for a housekeeper) steps and the voice of the butler, to the surprise of the audience, this time sounding unexpectedly polite and courteous... And a minute later, a tall young man enters the living room, whose silver-grey eyes cheerfully run around the audience.

Vlad: - Alex! Friend, finally... How did you manage to charm our housekeeper?

Vlad shakes his hand, and the young man smiles broadly.

Alex Verdi: - Really? Probably a natural gift. Well, next time I will try even better ...
Adele: - Alex!

A young woman approaches Alexander, and he takes her outstretched hand with a smile and shakes it lightly.

Adele: - Did you have a good trip?
Alex: - Yes, thank you, as always. That's just it... Tell me, weren't you surprised that there were almost no people at the station?...
Vlad (spreading his hands): - That's it, that's it, I told you! Even Alex noticed!
Adele: - Guys, stop it! By the way, Alex, how did you get here yourself?
Alex: - In general, they met me, but the car was kind of strange. Oh well... So, what's new?
Adele: - Nothing, except that we seem to have got into the game... Vlad, you should have at least warned me.
Vlad (looking at his friends in confusion): - Me? About what?
Adele: - About the quest game, of course. I could have told you right away. And not to chat about the inspection of the house ...
Vlad: - Well, this is part of the inspection. More precisely, an inspection. Well, that is... My God, guys, you confused me...
Alexander (looking at his friend in exaggerated amazement): - I mean, what kind of quest? Vlad, did I miss something?
Vlad: - I don't understand what's going on here. This house is like in Addams Family movie... As if not from this time. And the setting... Maybe I have a glitch?
Adele (shrugging her shoulders): - Then we have a massive glitch. How many of you have watched the film Jumanji?
Vlad: - Adele! Well, just don't start it, okay?
Adele: - Yes, I am joking, why? So, I have a suggestion - now we are all going to our rooms, and in the morning we will call the agents and the film crew with a sober head ...
Alex (looking at his cell phone): - It's easy to say. Does everyone have no signal? Or just me?
Adele: - I hasten to please you - everyone.
Vlad (sits down in a chair, frowning): - No, I don't like it... At all.
Adele (shrugging her shoulders): - Come on, guys... Well, what's special is the usual communication problems. I don't know about you, but I'm wildly tired and I want to go on a date with my pillow as soon as possible.
Alex (nodding): - Great idea. I personally have nothing against it... Tomorrow we will have a responsible day. By the way, maybe someone knows where I can leave things?
Butler: - Come on, young man.
Alex: - Some kind of nonsense...

They went upstairs. Walked down a long corridor, one side of which had tall windows with old and dusty drapes, the butler opened one of the massive mahogany doors.

- Please, young man. Your room.

Alex looked around with bewilderment. A small room, a half-wall window with a carved Gothic ornament (so is it like this everywhere?), a desk against the wall with a twisted candelabrum on it (where's the lamp?), and a four-poster bed. Snorting, the young man looks out the window. The full moon is shining in the sky, illuminating the entire surrounding space. It seems that every tree in the park was cast from silver, and the water in the lake shimmers in the ghostly moonlight. Suddenly, from somewhere in the distance, he heard a long-drawn howl, similar to... No, he probably imagined it. The young man takes out his cell phone. It's getting close to midnight. Casually throwing his jacket on the back of a chair, he lies down on the bed.

A Dream:
« ...He walks along the alley of the old garden, where the crowns of mighty trees obscured the sky, in which the full moon shone. Soon the alley leads him to a large old mansion. After a little hesitation, the man climbs the steps and knocks on the door. No one answers him. Instead, the door itself quietly opens, as if inviting him to enter. Not feeling fear, but rather a burning interest, he goes inside. His eyes are presented with a hall, in the middle of which there is a huge staircase leading up, and along the perimeter of which there are four doors. He becomes curious - what secrets does this house hide? The young man pushes the first door and sees a small room that turned out to be a kitchen. There are elegant porcelain cups and tall glass glasses in old wooden cabinets. By the layer of dust lying on them, it became clear that this dish had not been touched for a very long time. There are wax stains on the kitchen table. Candles were lit here.
Coming out of the kitchen and opening the next door, he sees a long corridor. Where does it lead? You can't see anything- it's dark. But in his pocket he had a portable flashlight, whose bright beam dispels the thick darkness. There is an old twisted chandelier on the ceiling. Candles used to burn on it, but now the spiders that have taken root here have woven their nets. He sees another door on the right. To his surprise, it opens just as easily and silently. But the room is empty. A small window looks out into the garden, a candlestick on the windowsill is the servants' room.
The musty smell makes him leave this room as soon as possible and return to the hall. But now he's paying attention to the other two doors. As it turns out, one of them leads to the living room. A man admires the ghostly beauty of this room - a large fireplace, an old piano by a huge window, curtained with light tulle, slightly swaying under the gusts of wind coming from the window and ... portraits. But one of them, hanging directly over the fireplace, attracts his attention especially. It depicts a tall man holding the hand of a lady in a white dress. However, their faces cannot be seen, since the author put a thick shadow on them, highlighting only his expressive azure eyes… In her hands, the girl holds a snow-white rose, made so skillfully that it looks like a living one…
Behind another door there is a library, in its cabinets there are many old folios, many of which are richly bound. Near the fireplace (not as big as in the next room) there are a couple of armchairs and a table. On it is a twisted candelabra and an open book. The young man picks it up and discovers that it is a collection of poems, but whose?
Alex (reading out loud):
“It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wing;d seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.”

These words seem vaguely familiar to him. Adgar Allan Poe. Quite in the spirit of the place. Alex thoughtfully closes the book and puts it back on the table. Looking at his watch, he notices that its hands have stopped at twelve o'clock. Morning or night? A chill runs down his spine. Shrugging his shoulders, he decides to hurry back to the hall. However, unable to resist the strange feeling that attracts him, the young man climbs up the stairs to the second floor. Diffused moonlight pours from a tall window with multicolored panes, leaving whimsical reflections on the stairs. Suddenly he hears a quiet but very beautiful melody, as if someone invisible is playing the piano. She leads him, making him forget about everything. On the landing in front of the locked door, the melody stops. After a little hesitation, the young man takes the handle, and the door opens. Behind it is a bedroom. But then, at the window, he notices someone's figure.

Voice: - And how long are you going to stand like this?
Alex: - Sorry, but it seemed to me that the house was uninhabited…
Voice (sadly): - Maybe. At first sight. It's very strange that you found me.
Alex: - You? In what sense?

The young man did not take his eyes off the mysterious figure, trying to make out her face. But it is hidden from him in the shadows.

Voice: - It's very simple. Only the heart is sharp-sighted, you will not see the most important thing with your eyes.
Alex: - But maybe you don't want to be found yourself? And now you have not come out to meet me, but are hiding there in the shadows...
Voice: - Do you think so? However, I will answer you honestly - I always wanted everything to be different. But...

That voice, so wonderfully gentle and soft, but at the same time full of inexplicable longing. He seemed to have heard it many times before. I wonder what the other person looks like? Even without seeing, Alex realised that the woman in front of him... He squeezed his eyes shut, wiped them, but the obsession didn't pass.

Alex: - But you still haven't said - who are you?
Voice (with interest): - What do you think?
Alex: - I don't know. But maybe you tell me.
Voice: - Well, maybe you're right. But I also have a question - who are you then?

Who is he? Alex suddenly realised that his memory was as blank and clean as a white sheet of paper. It was already starting to scare him.

Alex: - I... don't remember.
Voice: - Do you want me to remind you?
Alex: - Can you?
Voice: - Yes… Go to the mirror.
Alex: - What the hell is going on here?!
Voice: - Make up your mind...

The young man turns to the large mirror hanging behind his back... The scene is changing. He finds himself at a huge wrought-iron gate, which, with a creak, opens to meet him. A strange feeling fills him. Not fear, but rather a vague excitement. As though... he's been here before. But how, when? The whole surrounding area was flooded with milky-white fog, through which the vague outlines of the tall trees of the park appeared. Then he saw a path. Where does it lead? Lost in his thoughts, he did not notice how he ended up at the pond. Suddenly, he hears a soft sob. A young man walks towards the sound. But it doesn't repeat itself... And then he sees the girl...

Alex: - Who's there?
Anabelle: - And who are you?

The young man looks at the girl. Strangely, she seems vaguely familiar to him. But where and when could he have seen her?

Anabelle: - Why are you silent?
Alex: - I am... Tell me, have we met before?

The girl sighs sadly, lowering her head.

Annabelle: - So you forgot everything. Sorry...

All this is impossible. Delirium, a nightmare, or someone's stupid joke... But the tear that rolled down her cheek is absolutely real...

Alex: - Listen, lady. I do not know what you imagined there, but...
Anabelle: - Yes, of course, all this is just a game of imagination. It plays a strange trick on us sometimes, doesn't it?
Alex: - What are you talking about?
Annabelle: - Come to me.

The young man obeys. He takes her outstretched hand in his.

Annabelle: - That's it, now close your eyes...

Suddenly, pictures flashed before his eyes, fragments of memories, and when it was over, he again felt that he was at the pond. His legs wouldn't hold him. Sinking to the ground, he covered his face with his hand.

The man turned his gaze to the girl standing in the distance: - It's impossible. Annabelle...
Annabelle (smiling sadly): - Hello, Albrecht.
Albrecht: - Why?! Why am I here again? I did not want to remember all this, ever.
Annabelle: - I'm sorry. It's necessary. That's the reason why you're here.
Albrecht: - What?! You don't know what you're talking about. Do you remember what happened in the past?
Annabelle: - Yes. And I... understand that we can't do anything about it. And here is the future and it all in your hands.

The girl comes up and, kneeling next to him, runs her hand through his silky hair. The young man wants to say something, but she covers his lips with her palm. A bright light shone in her palms. In the next second, the light becomes dazzling, hitting the very centre of his chest, filling the young man with all his warmth. For a moment it seems to him that he has lost consciousness, but when the light goes out, he realizes that something has changed... Stunned, he looks down at himself. His dark satin suit was gone. Now he is dressed in all white — a snow-white shirt and trousers.

Albrecht: - What... What does this new mean?
Annabelle: - It means that it's time for you. Remember who you are. And do not lose this light that is in your soul. It's time for you to go back, they're waiting for you...
Albrecht: - Who? Annabelle…

The young man opening his eyes, he looks around, breathing heavily... It's been dawn for a long time, birds are chirping merrily outside the window. Alex runs his hand over his eyes. God, what a dream... He had never dreamed of anything like this...

***

.. Agree, waking up on the side of the road is not a pleasant pleasure. Even in the car, but still... It looks like she will have to stay here, because the fog did not think to subside, and it is very difficult to find the way. Fortunately, the girl discovers a very good hotel nearby, where she decides to stay for a few days. The hostess greets her affably and now, having settled down in a fairly comfortable room, the girl can relax a little... But as soon as the fog clears, she decides to wander around the city, which, although it looks abandoned by its inhabitants, still retains the former splendour of neo-Gothic and will tell her much more himself. After all, cities always carefully keep their secrets. But what secrets does this city keep?

Act 2. The Call of the Past

Adele: - Alex, hello! Am I talking to you?
Alex (looking absently at her friend sitting next to her. While Vlad was trying to contact the agency, he again plunged into the memories of last night. Therefore, the words of his girlfriend caught him by surprise): - Yes... what? Sorry... I just didn't get enough sleep... So, what was it about?
Adele: - I wanted to tell you what I managed to find out from our taciturn caretaker... Harold, I think.
Vlad: - What? Did you manage to get him to talk? Adele, you surprise me more and more...
Adele: - Thank you. So, if you don't interrupt me, then I'll tell you everything in order.
Vlad (smiles and, having exchanged glances with Alex, asks): - I will be dumb as a fish. Well?
Adele: - To be honest, all this reminds me a bit of a fantasy novel. If we hadn't seen it with our own eyes, I would have thought the old man had dementia. So I'm passing on word for word all this nonsense: he said that this city used to be known all over the world as the most progressive in the field of science and technology. And over time, it has grown so much that it has turned into a state, with its capital in the city of Edinburgh (in general, that's where we are). This state was ruled by the wise and honest Emperor Friedland the First the Great, it was under him that the dawn of the empire began. The speed with which the Empire was developing horrified the entire progressive world, which soon had to admit that, compared to Koenigburg, it was not so progressive. Then, when other countries were forced to stall, postponing the modernization of production under the pressure of the lazy aristocracy, who wanted to skim the cream from rich deposits and throw them as soon as production was depleted, Koenigburg invested everything in modern technologies. From that moment on, Koenigburg could no longer be stopped. The genius of Emperor Friedland made of him an unattainable, rising from the ashes and ascending to the sun, a fiery bird. It's scary to touch her, but it's impossible not to reach out to her. The emperor was very domineering and strict, but the only one who saw his benevolent gaze was his son, the Crown Prince. The boy from childhood was gifted with an extraordinary mind, talent for science, architecture. And in return, his father saw in him his future successor, to whom he would hand over his entire kingdom. But after the emperor departed into the world of eternity, his place was taken by his viceroy, Baron De Villanova ...
Vlad (looks at Alex for support, but he is so deep in thought that he does not notice it): - But what happened? In order for such a progressive empire to collapse, at least a civil war is needed.
Adele: - It looks like something similar happened here. Anyway, the name of this city and country were simply erased from people's memory...
Vlad: - It's clear. So, this house...
Adele: - No, the emperor's palace was destroyed long ago. And this is just one of the estates of the nobility, the main residence has fallen into such disrepair that it can hardly be searched among the surrounding forests ...
Vlad: - It doesn't fit in my head... After all, if this city was so modern, and empire was so strong ...
Adele: - Well, every empire comes to an end one day. So, it happened with Edinburgh. Alas...
Alex: - And what happened to the Crown Prince?
Adele: - The caretaker did not expand on this... But he mentioned something about a girl... It seems there is some kind of juicy mystery in this story. His name was Albrecht.
Vlad: - Like always… Hey, Alex, what are you doing?

The young man turns pale, and his palms involuntarily clench. Without saying a word, he jumps up from his chair and leaves the room.
Adele: - What's wrong with him?
Vlad: - I have no idea... Maybe he ate something wrong? Well, what are we talking about...

Adele's words make him dizzy... Trying to calm down, the young man walks briskly along the path of the garden. Immersed in his thoughts, he does not notice how he finds himself at the pond. Looking around, he feels a slight chill... This was the very place where he had met her, in that dream. So it's all true. But only... what does he have to do with it? And what did Annabelle want to tell him? So many questions and all unanswered. The day, to everyone's relief, is going very well. Vladimir manages to get through to the owner of the house and he agrees to drive up as soon as possible. In his absence, friends decide to explore the neighbourhood of the house, but Alex, who has always preferred self-inspection to group excursions, taking a camera, decides to walk around and take survey pictures, and, in addition, look for the best place for tomorrow's photo shoot. The main thing is that the client is satisfied. After all, cooperation with this magazine is very, very important for their company... Completely chilled, he returns to the building, where the caretaker is already lighting the fireplace. Going out into the hall, the young man goes up to the second floor. To his surprise, all the doors of the rooms are locked, except for one... Entering the room, he discovers an antique grand piano. Despite the time that has passed, it is quite in decent condition. Sitting down on the chair in front of him, Alex takes a few chords he knows. Once his parents spent a lot of time and effort on his musical education. But he did not think that he would be able to put his knowledge into practice… The voice of the Herald, the butler, brings him out of his reverie.

Herald: - You play well.
Alex (closing the piano lid): - Thank you. Very good piano.
Herald: - I didn't think you could play.
Alex: - Me too.

The young man looked around the room with interest. Although time had already left its mark on it, the preserved colours of the marvellous frescoes and stucco on the ceiling still reminded him of its former splendour.

Alex: - Herald, could you bring me up to speed a little? I was told that this mansion was built in the 19th century. Is it true?
Herald: - Yes, but why…
Alex: - I'm just wondering… I admit I've seen a lot of houses, but this one… Who were his previous owners?
Herald: - I'm not... sorry, sir, but there's nothing I can help you with. Our current owner lives abroad and rarely comes here. So, we are even glad that the house will finally not be empty.
Alex (thoughtfully): - Yes, it's strange, today I wanted to look at the rooms upstairs, but they are locked.
Herald: - Unfortunately, I can't help you here. The owner forbade them to open.
Alex: - Why is that?
Herald: - I can't tell you that either.
Alex (perplexed): - But there must be a reason! Are the seven wives of Bluebeard hidden there? Huh...
Herald: - Not at all. And why would you think that?

His words make the young man smile and shake his head.

Alex: - Yes, there really is something special in this house. Are you sure that we are not in the last century and you are not the count's housekeeper?
Herald: - Well, what a childish invention! Nonsense!

But his confusion seems very suspicious to Alexander. Interesting... Friends who have returned from a walk, gathered in the dining room, share their impressions. After snacking on the sandwiches and drinking his favourite green tea, Alex decides to go upstairs. But on the way, he still notices that Manfred and Faina, the maid, are standing aside and, not noticing him, are whispering about something. It's not usually his way to eavesdrop, but in this situation, Alex decides to stay outside the door.

Herald: - ... this house. Oh, these agents are always meddling in their own business.
Gloria: - Herald...
Herald: - No, I just don't understand... But you know... and I myself yesterday…
Gloria: - What are you talking about?
Herald: - You know perfectly well, that... Don't you remember what we were told?
Gloria: - Yes… But what can we do?
Herald: - And yet... what if…
Gloria: - Herald, that's enough. By the way the house is cold, and our heating system is completely out of order...

Then there is a discussion of everyday issues, and Alex is not interested in listening to this at all. Entering his room, he sinks into a chair and, covering his face with his hands, plunges into thought.

Alex (looking out the window): - Why did this stupid joke excite the Herald so much? It can't be... No, nonsense. Surely, it's all because of the atmosphere prevailing in this house. We must not forget that we live in the modern world. The twenty-first century is outside the window, which means that all prejudices should remain in the past.

Alex spends the rest of the day working with photos. When he is immersed in work, the rest of the world ceases to exist for him, so the sound of the clock striking on the mantelpiece makes him shudder. Dusk is already gathering in the room. Alex turns off the laptop. In his daily worries, he tries to forget about what Adele told him. But now, in the silence of the dim room, memories came flooding back to him... He lies down on the bed, closing his eyes. This girl in a dream... He can't remember everything, but it looks like she said something about memory... Memory. Oh, how he wishes someone would put it out, blow it out like a candle. It's like watching a movie on a big screen: childhood, adolescence, youth... Gray sky, familiar street, houses... A film called Life. In which you are only an actor, not a director, all the time trying to play your role as best as possible. It's easier that way. It's easier that way... And who cares? All life is a game and the people in it are actors. This phrase is known to each of us. We all wear masks, play our roles, forgetting who we are here and now, while remembering that it's not enough to seem... The masquerade surrounds us from all sides, and we obey... Although what's the difference?

Clutching his head with his hands, the young man got up of bed and looked out the window. Nothing was visible — everything was in a fog. He looked at his watch—two o'clock in the morning... It's strange, but he didn't suffer from insomnia before. Back in bed, he closed his eyes. To fall asleep, to forget... the main thing is not to think about anything...

Annabelle: - I knew you would come back...
Albrecht: - You again? What do you need from me?

The young man looked in amazement at the girl who smiled at him. The raven, cawing, flies up to her and lands on her hand.

Annabelle: - Well done, Midnight... Hello, Albrecht von Carsten. Now you know everything, don't you?
Albrecht: - What? How do you...
Annabelle: - Many things are open to me... But the question is, are you ready for this? The past can hurt. But it is necessary to find yourself and find the meaning of your life.

The young man shakes his head defiantly, folding his arms on his chest.

Albrecht: - Just let's not have philosophy. There is no past and no future. There is only here and now...
Annabelle: - Well, you're right. Why chase after something that is already over? However, it is necessary to remember this in order not to fall into the same trap again and again.
She holds out her hand to him.
Annabelle: - Please, Albrecht... Trust me.
Albrecht: - What are you talking about?
Annabelle: - I know it's difficult. But I promise you'll understand...

After a little hesitation, the man took her hand in his. The fog thickened, swallowing their figures.

... After leaving the hotel, the girl tried to set up GPS, but nothing came out. The Internet didn't work either. It looked like there really was some kind of anomalous zone here. She had to navigate the old-fashioned way, with the help of a map. It remaind only to choose the direction. Fortunately, the compass worked properly, so the girl, simply chose the shortest path to the place where, according to her, the Palace is located, heads down the street... It was necessary to pay tribute to those who built this city - the roads, like the houses, although they had fallen into disrepair and seem almost uninhabited, were still in very good condition. And her black leather jacket and black jeans made the girl almost invisible among the grey buildings...

Anna: - What a pity that such a beautiful and obviously rich city once fell into such decline. I wonder where all the residents are?

Then, as if in response to her thoughts, the girl noticed a woman dressed as a gypsy in front of her. When she saw the girl, she stoped abruptly, causing the basket in her hands to tilt and all the contents spilled out onto the pavement.

Anna: - I'm sorry, I scared you. I'll get it all together now.
Zarina: - Oh, don't bother. I'll do it myself, - the gypsy deftly returned the fruit to its place and looked at the girl carefully, as if not believing her eyes. - I just don't recall seeing you here before.
Anna: - Hmm, the fact is that I myself have been here recently... And I didn't think that any of the residents remained here. They say that the city is gradually dying out...
Sarina: - Hah, it serves you right. But don't look at me like that, honey. I'm joking, - the gypsy laughed, but besides, her eyes remained serious. - By the way, my name is Zarina.
Anna: - Very nice, I'm Anna.
Zarina: - Anna... Amazing. You are our first guest in many years... Well, going back to your words, there is nothing to be surprised about. It's still the twenty-first century. So, everyone is rushing to the big cities... But I have a lot of old photos left, if you want, I can show you.
Anna: - I'd love to, but... - something in her appearance alarmed the girl. Her whole being screams - run. - I really have to go, maybe next time.
Zarina: - Well, then, take it as a souvenir... - she took out a round object from her bosom and handed it to the girl, mysteriously adds: "Memory is priceless, honey. Remember this... for the future”.
Anna: - Thank you.

Without a second thought, the girl took the object, which turned out to be a small, skilfully made mirror. But as soon as she looked into its depths, everything swam before her eyes...

Act 3. Twilights

"... Grey sky.... A gusty, piercing wind makes a noise in the crowns of the trees, tearing off the last yellow leaves falling on the asphalt of the deserted alley of the park… The old house. Having penetrated into the chimney and flying through the dusty attic, where hordes of spiders spread their nets, he pushed open the cracked door. It creaked open. Descending the stairs to the first floor, the wind blows through the deserted halls with a quick breeze. Knocking on the dim glass of the tall windows… Then something alarms him – he saw an old monogram on an old, peeling wall. Wait a minute… He knows this house! The wheel of time begins to rotate in the opposite direction… The mansion is lit by hundreds of candles on the huge twisted chandeliers of the ballroom. The fragrance of rosebuds, the chirping of cicadas and the whispering of trees in the garden penetrates through the open windows.

Zerlina: - Annabelle! Madam, where are you?

The excited voice of the maid makes the girl sitting in the branches of the tree shudder. As always, it's not the right time. She slams the sketchbook shut and slides down quietly.

Zerlina: - Mistress...
Annabelle: - Boo!

The maid screams and clutches at her heart.

Zerlina: - For God's sake, Mistress Anabel, is that really possible?

The girl started to laugh, but then abruptly became serious.

Annabelle: - Sorry, Zerlina. I didn't mean to, just... My father is calling me again, right?
Zerlina: - Of course. Madam, it's a ball today... Everyone has already gathered and is looking for you... And you haven't even combed your hair yet! What am I going to tell the count? ...
Annabelle: - Don't worry, we'll make it...

Seeing the Countess, the dresser throws up her hands.

Costumer: - My God! My dear, but you are not ready for the ball at all! No, it's just unbearable! Put on your dress immediately!
Annabelle: - As always, - the girl gritting her teeth, looks at her outfit with discontent. - Is that why I have to wear this?
Costumer: - You already look like a boy! But you're a lady! What's this?

The costumer takes the album from the girl and hands it to the maid.

Costumer: - No, it's just unbearable! A lady at your age should think about beauty and high society, and you are in the clouds! I'll have to tell Madame Juliette...

Pursing her lips, the girl looks angrily at the costumer. She knows that if she complains to her governess, then punishment cannot be avoided. Realizing that it is useless to argue, the young Countess goes behind the screen. However, when the maid approaches her, wanting to tighten her corset, the girl looks at her so piteously that she just shrugs her shoulders. Having laced up her dress, the Countess smiles with satisfaction. With her slim waist, no one will notice the absence of such a wardrobe detail... Even the costumer, after scrutinizing the girl, nods contentedly. There were no problems with the hairstyle (fortunately, her curly copper curls always made the work easier), and the countess, hiding her face under a mask, leaves the room.

... A lot of guests - ladies in silks and brocades, whose diamonds shine and sparkle, shimmering with all the colours of the rainbow on their swan necks, fanning themselves, talking to their gentlemen. Walking through all this sparkling crowd and seeing the appraising glances of the ladies and the voluptuous eyes of the men, the girl feels an attack of nausea. How she wants to be at this moment far away from here, in Trondheim, among the rocks and feel the sea breeze... After all, then she was so free, like a Seagull flying over a wave. And here, she feels like a butterfly caught in the snares of a strong and powerful spider. She knows perfectly well that the reception and the masquerade ball are not arranged in her honour at all. It was His Imperial Highness' favourite pastime. And let her not know him personally yet (which she knew she could not avoid, because that's what her parents expect from her - so that their daughter would come to court, becoming a maid of honour), but her imagination had already drawn a frail, pampered young man with an oily look and a hanjies manner. Ugh, I'd rather leave this evening behind...

The Voice: - Be careful!

A voice above her makes the girl shudder. Lost in thought, she does not notice how she collides with a young man, almost knocking a glass of wine out of his hands.

Annabelle: - I'm sorry, monsieur.

The Countess slowly raises her distracted gaze to the man standing in front of her. The first thing that strikes her is not his rich suit and half mask— but his eyes. Like molten amber... Meeting his gaze, the girl feels an electric shock — it seems that he sees through her.

The Masked Man: - Still, be more careful next time, my lady.

His slightly mocking, melodious voice makes the girl wake up. Pulling away from the man, she quickly nods and hurriedly enters the ballroom. Her parents are already there, clearly unhappy with her tardiness. The count frowns disapprovingly, but his wife looks affectionately at her daughter.

Countess: - Annabelle, finally! We've been waiting for you...
Count: - Where have you been, can I find out? - the count looks at his daughter with a heavy look. - Do you even realize the position you're putting us in with yours?

Annabelle: - I'm sorry, - here her hand is intercepted by a young man in a white half mask who has imperceptibly approached them, in which the girl recognizes, not without amazement, the very man she met at the entrance to the hall.

The Masked Man: - You probably forgot that this dance was promised to me.
Countess: - Oh, Your Majesty... You're already here... We have been expecting you and it is a great honour...
Crown Prince Albrecht: - I hope Countess won't refuse me?

The Crown Prince smiles charmingly, making the girl even more confused. Nodding, she allows the Prince to lead her to the middle of the hall... The prince makes a sign to the orchestra, and the musicians, obeying the wave of the conductor's wand, play a beautiful melody. The Countess puts her white-gloved hand on the Prince's shoulder, and they open the first round of the waltz. Her legs in white satin shoes flutter on the parquet, her eyes are closed – she has completely surrendered to the power of music and her leading partner. It seems that the dance can last forever, but the music subsides…

Crown Prince Albrecht: - Do you mind a walk, Countess?

A whisper close to her ear, envelops the girl with heat. Annabelle nods, and the Crown Prince drags her into the garden, away from the stuffy hall.

Crown Prince Albrecht: - So, as I understand it, this is your first time in Konigburg? But where have you been hiding until then? ...
Anabel: - I... I recently returned from a long trip to Norway...
Crown Prince Albrecht: - Really? I've never been there.. Surely this is a cold and deserted area, where piercing winds blow. I don't think I would have liked it there.
Annabelle: - No! Trondheim is beautiful, these picturesque fjords and high cliffs... Wind... He plays so beautifully in the heather thickets... Have you ever been outside of Konigburg?

Sitting down on a bench in the shade of a spreading beech tree, she directs her gaze at the Crown Prince.

Crown Prince Albrecht: - Alas... State affairs rarely give you the opportunity to dispose of your time the way you want. And I even envy you to some extent, because you are so free and carefree...
Annabelle: - Oh, is this freedom? This city... It's very, very difficult to get used to... Honestly, I would agree to a lot if only I could be there again, feel the sea breeze in my face and see these expanses, the sea...
Crown Prince Albrecht: - Is that world much better than Konigburg?

The prince looks attentively at the girl. He doesn't know him, the other one doesn't know her world. But still, in some incomprehensible way, he imagines what she describes.

Annabelle: - It is neither better nor worse... It is different, it is moving. Here, time seemed to stand still.
Crown Prince Albrecht: - They say that nothing is impossible, Countess. The main thing is not to lose faith... Everything will depend on you. Tell me, can we see each other again?
Annabelle: - Your Highness, I... yes... But where? And...
Crown Prince Albrecht: - I'll sort it out, you don't have to worry about it. I would really like to hear the Northern Legends. And see this world... through your eyes.

Then the sound of footsteps is heard nearby and a minute later a breathless Circe, the countess's maid, appears in front of them.

Zerlina: - I'm sorry, Your Highness, but His Excellency has urgently sent me for the lady. It looks like he wants to talk to you.

Startled, the girl looks at the Crown Prince and awkwardly bows.

Crown Prince Albrecht: - Well, His Excellency's word is law. See you soon... Annabelle.
Annabelle: - Goodbye, Your Majesty...
Crown Prince Albrecht: - Albrecht, I would prefer that we do without familiarity, do you mind?
Annabelle: - Not at all, - the Countess smiled, but noticed the strong excitement of the maid and whispered: - See you later...

***

The young man woke up from the strongest thunderclap. Breathing heavily, he looked at his watch. Half past five... From the silence reigning in the mansion, it was clear that his friends were still sleeping. But sleep did not come. Got out of bed, he went to the bedside table and pours himself some water. It seemed that every day his dreams became more realistic and more realistic... This girl... What did she want? What did all this even mean? He'd like to know... Another time he would have laughed at it if someone had told him something like that. But now he's not laughing at all. Clutching his head in his hands, he set down in an armchair by the extinguished fireplace. With every minute spend in this mansion, it seemed to him that he inexplicably ended up somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century. It's stupid, of course, but it looked like this city doesn't intend to let them go. Yesterday, the connection was cut off again, and no matter how they tried to contact the agency, the operator repeated only one thing: "You are out of the mobile coverage area..." And, in addition, he looked at the phone screen...

Alex: - What the...? It doesn't happen that way!

But nevertheless, October 28 was still stubbornly on the screen. The day they arrived at the mansion... Alex looked at his reflection in the mirror opposite, but then it seems to him that the image of another person flashed through inside it ...

Alex: - What's going on here?!...

***

The clock on the mantelpiece strike six. Opening her eyes, the girl stared at the ceiling for a long time, trying to figure out where she was and what's wrong with her. The last thing she remembers was a vague image of a man... Only now the dream was extremely realistic, but probably it was just a game of imagination again. What cannot be imagined... But then she remembered the gypsy and her gift. The mirror! It all happened after she looked into it. Fortunately, the purse was nearby and the girl quickly found what she was looking for. The mirror was indeed very unusual - as if cast from silver, only its surface, perfectly reflecting the surrounding objects, for some reason seemed to be covered with a light haze... Putting it aside, the girl plunged into thought. Something still did not fit together in her mind, namely, how could she be in her room when she clearly remembered that she was on the street? So someone brought her here. The girl hurriedly checked her purse — the money and documents were in place, the door was locked from the inside, since there was still a key in the keyhole — an old habit, from the hostel, which saved her from uninvited guests many times. Sitting on the bed, the girl started to think. What, after all, could it mean? Then her eyes fall on the cell phone. October 28... Stop! After all, October 28 was already yesterday! Maybe it's some kind of system failure? In any case, she needs to go down and talk to the owner of this guest house.

Fortunately, she just happened to be at the key stand when the girl came downstairs. But the question of the date disappeared by itself when the girl looked at the calendar standing at the reception desk... October 28th! It just can't be! It looked like she was like in that movie — got into Groundhog Day. This was not enough!... Get stuck not only in this abandoned city, but also in Time... In upset feelings, the girl went outside. What should she do? So, she need to find at least one of the residents, find out what inexplicable things are happening here... The girl picked up her pace, complaining about the fog, which seemed to have thickened even more. How not to get lost here, too... With all her might, she collided with a woman.

Astrid: - Hey, careful! Are you blind?

The woman looks at the girl with hostility. Anna immediately draws attention to her rather bizarre outfit: a white blouse over which there was a brown leather corset and a long skirt... The blonde hair of the woman was cut in a short square, which was very becoming to her sea-blue eyes... In order not to be impolite, the girl apologizes, asking where she can find a taxi. Her question makes the woman grin.

Astrid: - Taxi? In Konigsberg? Honey, did you fall off the moon?
Anna: - No, it's like...
Astrid: - That's what I see, no.

She looked ironically at the girl, which made her feel completely uncomfortable.

Astrid: - By the way, you are wandering alone here for nothing... Don't you know how dangerous it is?
Anna: - I don't understand anything anymore. I think I'm going crazy.

Squeezing her temples, Anna tried to pull herself together so as not to panic. The woman laughed.

Astrid: - No wonder. This city can affect an unprepared person in a different way. But it's good that you met me. My name is Astrid.

She held out her hand to her. The girl with feeling shaked her rough, as if from rough work, palm.

Anna: - I'm very glad, Astrid, I'm Anna... But for God's sake, tell me, what kind of city is this? I've been trying to establish communication with the outside world for several days, but my smartphone and MacBook just refuse to listen...
Astrid: - I really don't quite understand what you're talking about, but I'll still try to help you. But first, let's get back to the warmth, my house is just nearby.

Entering an old five-storey house at the very end of the street, the girl looked around in surprise, because the first thing she saw were a lot of mirrors, curtained with light brown tulle. But her new acquaintance didn't seem to pay attention to her surprise at all.

Astrid: - Here, take it, - she handed the girl a hot fragrant drink in a large glass. - This will restore your strength, otherwise I see you are about to collapse right on the floor.
Anna: - Thank you.

The girl carefully siped the tart liquid, and immediately a pleasant warmth run through her veins. Mulled wine, and such a bright, original taste, which she had not tasted for a very long time.

Anna: - What a nice taste...
Astrid: - You're welcome, here, sit down by the fireplace.

Astrid handed the girl a plate of sliced cheese.

Astrid: - I know what it means to starve... Besides, I'm glad that for so many years I have someone to exchange a few words with. Our city is dying out little by little...
Anna: - Really? But I know very little about Konigsberg... - she took another sip of the drink and leaned back in her chair. - Maybe you can tell me what's going on here in general? It seems like time has stopped...
Astrid: - Yes... The Pendulum of Time... - an elderly woman looked distantly at the flames dancing in the fireplace, as if she saw something unknown to anybody but her in them. - Perhaps this city deserves it. We are all here like old clockwork dolls, robots that will soon crumble into dust that will scatter the winds of the future...
Anna: - What are you talking about? - The girl looked at Astrid warily. It looked like she was not joking. - You speak as if there is a spell hanging over this city...
Astrid: - Maybe so. Pride... Pride and greed are the sins for which Heaven has punished us. But once this city was the greatest capital of Masters, where science, art and beauty flourished... If you only knew what holidays, what fairs were held in the City of Masters! People from all over the world came to Konigsberg to see the wonders that our artisans were famous for... And I myself, in my time... - the elderly woman sighed heavily. - But it's all in the past, why remember what you can't bring back... We endured as much as possible. But everything comes to an end. It all started after the death of the Emperor, more than a hundred years ago. Then his viceroy, Baron de Villanova, ascended to the throne... We hoped that he would continue the emperor's work. But the governor turned out to be an evil usurper who wanted to subjugate not only Edinburgh, but the whole world... And he certainly didn't care about the needs of his subjects. Taxes have all increased, lawlessness and darkness have enveloped everything around ...
Anna: - More than a hundred years? Astrid, but forgive me, how old are you then?
Astrid smiled enigmatically: - What do you think? After all, time has stopped... So, each of us remained forever in the age we were in one of the last days of our habitual lives. Before the Baron took over the government. Unfortunately this is a given of this world. Everything around the Capitol - the former imperial palace, which the Baron made his residence - the gap between the wealthy residents of the Upper City and the districts has become catastrophic... Not knowing how else to highlight their beauty, the Ladies of the city were ready to do anything in order to make their figure the most chiselled, the sexiest and appetizing. Otherwise, how could they arouse the desire of the pampered gentlemen of the Upper World? God forbid the girl has small breasts or hips a little less than they should be... Scandal! Anna: - But really no one could resist?
Astrid: - Why not? There were uprisings, but they were suppressed with extreme cruelty... We were hoping that the Crown Prince would show up... But he disappeared as soon as de Villanova ascended the throne. Apparently, the usurper got rid of him... Poor boy. He would have been the best successor to his father. But how could he challenge the Iron Emperor? - Astrid sighed. - Well, what was, is gone... But your world is moving. There is still hope in him.
Anna: - Hope? I don't know if she stayed... Earlier, reading the works of science fiction and watching thrillers about the future of our world, I was outraged — how can you so thicken the colours? But now I see they were right... Quite recently, I came across a novel that just described our world as it is now: soulless, mechanized, devoid of feelings and consisting of only posts and likes... There are no riddles, no mysteries... Everything is so simple and banal. It's like flipping through a fashion magazine. Funny... and sad. But for what it's all about... Rush along this road of life, strive... To what?

Astrid: I don't quite understand what kind of likes you are talking about, but apparently, in fact, you are standing on the threshold of the same point of no return to which Koenigburg once approached. It's our own fault. Permissiveness leads to the fact that instead of working for enlightenment and searching for new horizons for the development of the future, the whole role of science is reduced to meeting urgent needs. Nothing changes... Once Darkness enveloped the Empire, and now it is spreading to the whole world. You know, because the growing gap between the nobility and the rest of the people caused frequent robberies on the streets, many Masters were killed by their starving apprentices, while others, in order to take revenge on the Emperor, were so immersed in their art that they went crazy and committed suicide... Everything got out of control. And when the people were ready to start a riot, the news of the death of the Crown Prince came from the palace... And then, the pestilence began. Like a tornado, it swept through the streets of the city, claiming thousands of lives. Many who could still escape fled the country, but not everyone succeeded. The empire collapsed, overgrown with grass and forests... And Koenigburg... It is unlikely that anyone will remember him now. Its inhabitants are now nothing more than ghosts of the past. And I'm very sorry for you, my girl, because once you get here, you can't go back. Many tried, but perished in the forests and swamps...
Everything got mixed up... Anna was in shock – was she really stuck in this damned city forever now? No, her mind refused to accept this information... After all, we live in the real world... All these tales about Alchemists, Masters and Princes have long been only remnants of the past. Taking a deep breath to calm down, the girl took out a mirror and just wanted to look into it, as the woman knocked it out of her hands.

Anna: - What are you doing?

Outraged, the girl wanted to lift the mirror, but Astrid deftly snatched it from under her hands.

Astrid: - No, don't you dare look into it! - she turned it over in her hands and put it on the table, with the reflection facing down. - Where did you get it from?
Anna: - A gypsy woman gave it to me. This is a gift...
Astrid: - Zarina... Clever, oh so clever...
Anna: - What are you talking about?
Astrid: - My girl, you looked into it, didn't you?

Anna nodded and Astrid, frowning harder, shacked her head.

Astrid: - My dear, you are in great danger... After all, I made these mirrors and I know what power they have. But nothing can be done now. THEY already know that you're here and believe me, they won't let it go so easily...
Anna: - Are they? Who are you talking about, Astrid?

The girl looksed at the woman in disbelief. She closed her eyes, and her hands clenched. Looked like she said something she shouldn't have said...

Astrid: - Let's not talk about it. You never know who might hear. After all, the walls have ears. But again, I'm glad we met. While you're staying with me, because you have your things with you.

The girl nodded. All she had was a bag, which she carried with her. It was possible to forget about the suitcase left in the car — in such a fog, she was unlikely to find that parking lot...

Astrid: - Well, that's good. You're safe here. And now to sleep... the morning of the evening is more complicated...

The girl nodded. The fatigue and anxiety of the day were so strong that she uncontrollably begins to feel sleepy... Closing her eyes, she plunged into darkness...

Act 4. The right to choose

Vlad: - Good morning, everyone!

Vlad famously descended the stairs and, entering the living room, ploped down on a chair.

Vlad: - What a night... It's been a long time since I remember such a thunderstorm ...
Adele: - Yes, it's a terrible night... – the woman yawned and, taking a toast, lazily spread it with butter. - But our early bird still won't wake up? Have you seen Alex?
Vlad: - No, I expected him to join me while jogging - there is a large park next to the house... Ah, here he is... Alex, are you okay? You don't look very well...

The man looked at his friend with a smile, but he, as if not hearing the question, set down on an empty chair and silently took a cup of coffee. Friends exchanged glances.

Alex: - I'm sorry, Vlad, - the young man smiled with an effort. - I just didn't get enough sleep...
Vlad: - Yes, I see, pale as a sheet. You don't get sick. There are no doctors here, as you can see... There's no one to treat you, I'm sorry.
Alex: - No, I'm fine. Only... Guys, you didn't notice anything... Is there anything strange about our being here?
Vlad: - Yes, it seems not, - Vlad shrugged his shoulders. - And what?
Alex: - So, nothing...
Adele: - Well, if you do not take into account the complete lack of communication with the outside world, then everything else is fine. By the way, - Adele looked significantly at Alex. - Last night I found a huge library in one of the rooms... I thought you'd be interested.
Alex: - Library? Well, yes... perhaps it will interest you. Guys, excuse me, - quickly finishing the rest of the coffee, the young man left the room.
Adele: - What's wrong with him?...

***

Alex: - Oh, my God...

The young man, not believing, touched the sign. And immediately before his eyes, like a flash, flashed a memory that clearly does not belong to him... A large hall lit only by torches held in the hands of people dressed in black robes. On the floor, in front of them, there was a strange device in the form of a sphere. A gong was heard and seven girls in scarlet robes, like blood, enter the hall one after another... They bow before something invisible and then, as if by order, put their palms to the sphere. It starts spinning wildly... A bright flash of light...

Alex: - No!... God, - closing his eyes with his palms, the young man is forced to grab the table. - What is it?
Adele: - Alex, Alex, are you here? - Adele's voice suddenly coming from above brings him to his senses. - Wow! You're a real Sherlock Holmes!

Having descended into the dungeon, the girl looked around in amazement and delight.

Adele: - Any suggestions about this place?
Alex: - Not really, but still I managed to find something, - Alex pointed to the mantle. - Tell me, have you ever seen something like this?
Adele: - Come on, - the girl came closer. - Give me a light...

After carefully studying the sign, she nodded affirmatively.

Adele: - Yes, it's him. The sign of the Mystics.
Alex: - Mystics? - The man looked at the girl sceptically. - Do you believe that they really exist?
Adele: - Well, yes, everyone knows that... However, the true name of this organization should not be pronounced aloud. I think they are not looking for fame... Listen, maybe there's something else here that will shed light on everything that happened to us?

She looked around. However, apart from the table, drawings on it and a hanger with robes, there was nothing else in the office. A little disappointed, the girl offered to continue the search another time. Alex was about to extinguish the candles, when suddenly, among the books and scrolls on the table, he discovered a small key. Strange... Mechanically putting it in his pocket, he left the office.

Adele: - ... and now we can say with confidence that this house belonged to one of the members of this secret order! - the girl looked at her friend proudly.
Vlad: - That's always the way! I always miss the most interesting things... - half jokingly, half seriously, Vlad crossed his arms resentfully on his chest. - Alex, tell me how you manage to find adventures all the time, participate in them, and I stay away ...
Alex: - A natural gift, probably, - shrugging his shoulders, the young man raised from the chair. - Guys, whatever you want, but I'm going to sleep. True, here the night is almost indistinguishable from the day, but still, we all need to rest.
Adele: - Hmm, I think we've been out of breath for a whole year already, - the girl shook her smartphone. - I never thought that I would miss modern technologies so much ...
Vlad: - Adele, what are you, it's every person's dream to disappear from the real world for a week, secluded in a house in the middle of the forest, - the young man looked at his girlfriend with irony. She gave him a withering look, and he quickly added. - But Alex is right, it's time for us to go to our rooms. Good dreams to all...

... He was climbing the stairs to the second floor of a familiar old house. The dust-covered wooden steps creaked under his footsteps. The young man felt an indescribable atmosphere of antiquity, a subtle, barely discernible smell of time… Suddenly he heard it. That sound, the sound of a clock ticking away. Following it, he went up to the second floor. Turning to the right and walking down a long corridor, he noticed that at one door the sound leading him had stopped. After a little hesitation, the young man took hold of the handle. To his surprise, the door was unlocked. He entered a room resembling an office, all the decoration of which was an old desk, a couple of chairs against the wall and a fireplace with an old impressive-looking Victorian clock standing on it, the hands of which froze at 12 o'clock.

Following a feeling that came from nowhere, the young man went to the window and opened it. The wind that burst into the room flew through it and melted. At the same moment, the young man felt like a light touch. Turning around, he saw a young girl behind him, who, smiling, pointed to a desk drawer. But as soon as the young man approached the table, the moonlight began to weaken and eventually the entire surrounding space was plunged into darkness.

Alex opened his eyes abruptly. It was already morning. Getting out of bed, he went to the window. He felt as if he run a kilometre distance: his heart was pounding, his forehead was sweating… How long it will last? These dreams… Suddenly, he felt a key in his pants pocket. And, at the same time, his gaze falls on the bedside table. He had noticed long ago that one of the drawers was locked. What if? After inserting the key, he turns it... And the box lends itself. But it's empty. With disappointment, Alex was about to push it, when he noticed that a small ring was attached to the bottom of it. Pulling on it, he sees how the bottom is lifted and a hiding place is discovered. It contained a couple of envelopes and an old leather-bound book. When he opens it, he realizes that it is a diary... But then a leaf falls out of it. Turning it over, Alex sees an old black-and-white photo. It looks like the plot of one of the balls of the city was displayed on it. The photographer chose a very good angle. In the frame, he immediately singled out the Crown Prince walking through the hall accompanied by a lovely girl. However, the Prince's face was not visible... Then there are some more gentlemen and ladies: almost all look at the object, stretch their lips in a smile, knowing that they are being filmed. And only one girl does not take her eyes off the Crown Prince. Although perhaps the brown-haired woman stood out against the general background not only for her complete indifference to photography. Either the light of the chandelier fell on her successfully, or the illustration in this place faded more, but the girl looked different than the others. Fresher and brighter, if the last word applies to a black-and-white picture. It was as if she, imprinted on paper, still retained a spark of life among the faded shadows.

He looked closely, trying to figure out what in this picture so hooked him. And at some point it seemed to him that the image in front of him was taking on colours, and the stranger herself was looking away from the heir to the throne and, through the lens, through the paper, through all these centuries, looking directly at Alex. He shuddered, and the delusion disappeared. But now he knew that he can't just leave everything. Moreover, everything that was happening does not seem to be a coincidence…

And again the morning, as cloudy as the previous one... For some reason, Anna was not at all surprised to find herself in her hotel room. Probably just everything in life needs to be treated philosophically... Even when you get into such a ridiculous situation. But since yesterday... Although was it the same yesterday? Maybe it's all just a continuation of the dream that she had once? But for some time now she noticed that her dreams have stopped, or rather reality has become a dream, and the dream has become a reality... More and more wonderful, as Alice said. That's just this place very little resembles a Wonderland. Yes and with... Well, she hasn't eaten anything since this morning and her strength is clearly running out. Fortunately, her housekeeper Emma comes to her aid here, advising her to visit a small restaurant just opposite the guest house.

The restaurant really turns out to be small: a hall, all sheathed in dark wood, a couple of tables and an old bar counter. The owner, like everyone else in this city, was dressed rather strangely: a shirt with grey spots, some kind of leather apron, canvas trousers, and his black dishevelled hair had obviously not known a comb for a long time. After handing her the menu, he left, rubbing his hands -a clear sign that visitors rarely come to him. Opening the menu, the girl was unpleasantly surprised by the absence of familiar dishes — no coffee, no sandwiches, nothing like this was observed here. But there were wines of all sorts, scrambled eggs with everything in the world, freshly baked bread and a large abundance of fish dishes... But there was no choice. After ordering a little white wine and a few poached eggs, the girl takes out her cell phone. Recently (ahem) she comes up with a good idea: why not capture in a photo all those with whom the city confronts her, perhaps this will give me a thread that will lead to a solution... Moreover, this method turns out to be quite effective — after scrolling through several photos, she finds an image of gypsy Aida and master Irene, made by her at the moment when she attentively examines my mirror... According to legend, photos stop time, so she was not at all surprised that her photo was saved in the phone's memory... Just in case, the girl captures this restaurant with its owner.. Who knows...

The entrance bell rang and a very beautiful girl entered the restaurant. The first thing Anna pays attention to is that her clothes are very different from what Astrid and the hostess of the hotel wore: an elegant dress with a dark blue turban and a hat clearly give her a person of high origin... Noticing her gaze, she raises an eyebrow rather arrogantly. Anna immediately pretends to be watching the owner of the restaurant, but apparently she can't be fooled that easily. Getting up from her chair, she goes to her table.

Elvira: - Is it free here?
Anna: - Yes, of course...

Anna nodded, and the girl gracefully sank into the next chair.

Elvira: - You've been watching me. Don't deny it, I noticed it. But your face is not familiar to me... You're a visitor, aren't you?
Anna: - Y-yes, - the girl tried to seem unperturbed. - I arrived in your city only yesterday. But this fog does not allow me to continue my journey ...
Elvira: - Oh, our area has long been known for its fogs, but... - she looked at Anna strangely. - That's not what you're interested in, is it...
Anna: - What are you talking about? I'm not...
Elvira: - Do not try to deceive me, - the girl took a glass of wine and, turning it in her hand, took a small sip. - It's not going to work out for you anyway. And, I will say more, you just need an ally in your search.
Anna: - But I don't even know your name, madam...
Elvira: - Oh, how rude of me, - the girl sarcastically grinned. - My name is Elvira. And that's all you need to know about me for now, Anna.

Ignoring the girl's extreme amazement, she continued:
Elvira: - Meanwhile, I, like you, am eager to leave this city, but... It's not only dangerous here alone, but it's completely pointless to do anything. Don't you think so?

The girl just nodded. In fact, this young woman was the first person in this city whose image turned out to be an absolute mystery to her.

Anna: - In that case, you should know a lot about the city and its inhabitants...
Elvira: - Residents? - The girl laughed shortly. - There are at most thirty of them left in the city... But I think I don't need to repeat the reason for that.
Anna: - Yes, I was told about it... - carefully removing away all the memories of meeting Astrid, the girl openly looked at Elvira. - It's a pity that everything happened this way...
Elvira: - Hmm, they deserved it. But I am not at all happy with the thought that I will have to end my days in this God-forsaken place... Perhaps the world outside of Konigburg has changed so much... But if you help me, then I will help you.

The young woman looked at Anna questioningly, and she had no choice but to agree. In the end, she's right, it would be madness to act alone, not knowing the mores and laws of this city.

Elvira: - Well, in that case we are partners. You don't have to worry about expenses — during this time my family has accumulated a lot of money, but there is absolutely nothing to spend it on here... So, the first thing we need to do is to give you the look of a charming resident of Konigsburg.
Anna: - Thank you, but I'm fine as it is.

In fact, Elvira's outfit, although it looked attractive, still seemed so bulky, and Anna did not want to lose comfortable jeans and a warm jacket for running. The girl shruged her shoulders.

Elvira: - As you wish, but you won't last long in this form...
Anna: - Why?
Elvira: - Yes, because you are very different from everyone else, and this, you will agree, is not a very wise decision in your case ... And, I'm sorry, but in order to survive here, you need supporters. And they, as you put it, still meet by clothes...

It was necessary to recognize the correctness of her judgments. But, fortunately, everything turned out to be much simpler than one might have expected. In the atelier, where Elvira brings the girl, she is offered a compromise — a white cotton blouse, a comfortable black corset and high-heeled boots. Having tried it all on, combined with black jeans, a leather jacket and blonde hair falling in waves on her shoulders (thanks to the stylists), Anna remains more than satisfied with her appearance. After scrutinizing her outfit, the girl nods approvingly.

Elvira: - Yes, it's much better this way. But come on, I have to introduce you to someone. I think this person will be your first supporter. And it can help us a lot.

After leaving the studio, Anna notices that the fog has dissipated a little and the outlines of buildings begin to emerge from it. Her companion nods affirmatively.

Elvira: - Yes, you noticed correctly. It just means that we are on the right track.

Through the maze of streets, the girls go to the lake, on the shore of which there is a small two-story red brick house. A young woman knocks on the door, and soon a squeaky voice answers them.

Falk Winchester: - What do you need? We don't buy anything...
Elvira: - It's good, because we don't have anything. Falk, don't you already recognize the voice?
Elvira: - Oh, madam, - the door opens and a grey-haired man appears on the threshold and bows respectfully. - I am incredibly glad to see you! For so many years...
Elvira: - I won't be long. Is your son here?
Falk: - Edmund? Oh, he's probably in his workshop. Where else would he be..." the old man laughs. - This kid has a lot of stubbornness and willpower... If he has decided something, he will certainly do it.
Elvira: - Thank you, Falk. Just do me a favour and don't tell anyone that we were here.
Falk: - What are you, as possible...

The old man goes to get a raincoat, and Elvira turns to the girl.

Elvira: - Come on, Anna. It's time for you to meet the Master of Time.

The workshop turns out to be right next to the house, closer to the lake. Already approaching her, the ticking of the clock is heard. It gets quieter, then louder... but then everything falls silent and an indignant exclamation is heard:

Edmund: - Yes, how much is possible? Damn...

Elvira knocks on the door.

Edmund: - Who's there?
Elvira: - Edmund...
Edmund: - Elvira, what a surprise! - the young man who opened it to them impulsively hugs the girl. - At least you should have warned me..
Elvira: - I'm sorry, I don't go to Lower Konigsberg often, you know... - Elvira winks at the Master. - But today I came on business.
Edmund: - Really? And to what exactly do I owe this honour? - the young man looks at the girl with irony.
Elvira: - We have a guest. And it seems that everything is exactly as it is said in the prophecy...

Not understanding what she is talking about, Anna silently looks from the girl to Edmund. What kind of prophecy? After all, not a word was said about it... Edmund's gaze also reflects sincere amazement.

Edmund: - Really? he opens the door even wider. - Come quickly!

Entering the workshop, Anna is amazed at the abundance of all kinds of watches and strange-looking devices, and in the middle, there is a wide table littered with various kinds of mechanisms. When everyone is settled on a bench at the table, Edmund takes out an old map.

Edmund: - As far as I know, you, Anna, have come to us from the future, which is in the present....
Anna: - Excuse me, what? Is it possible to be in the present and the future at the same time?
Edmund: - Everything is possible if you really want to. Time in general is an amazing thing (believe me, I know what I'm talking about, since I've been studying it for many years)... In the city, hours, minutes and years pass by us. Time seemed to stand still here. I am free because my time belongs only to me. No need to harm anyone, no need to obey anyone, no need to desire more than you can experience. Complete unity with nature. I left the hustle and bustle of the city and lived all these years here on the outskirts...

Edmund looked at the girls, but from his look it is clear that he himself is far away from here...

Edmund: - We believe that time is linear. That it flows constantly and evenly to infinity. But the difference between the Past, Present and Future is just an illusion. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow are not consistent. They are connected in an infinite loop. Everything is interconnected. But sometimes the passage of time is disrupted, lost due to human error. So it happened with Koenigburg.
Anna: - That is?

Even more confused, Anna looks anxiously at the Master. It's getting harder from hour to hour. It looks like she's definitely got into a very unpleasant story, but the worst thing is that she's starting to drag it out.

Edmund: - I think you saw those two sphinxes at the entrance to the city?

The girl nods.

Edmund: - Do you think they are here for beauty? Take it away... Someone said that they have been here since the beginning of time, which is not far from the truth.
Anna: - Wait, but Ancient Egypt is in a completely different direction...
Edmund: - Do you think that only the Egyptians used Pyramids and Sphinxes? What then about the pyramids of China, the Mayans and others? No, my dear Anna. It's not that simple... I think you've heard that this city used to be a stronghold of wisdom and knowledge?
Anna: - Yes, but...
Edmund: - This is still the strictest secret and it's not for me to reveal it... There is a time for everything. But now the main thing is that Edinburgh is one of the last remaining cities where the Centuries-old Knowledge of the whole Earth was collected.
Anna: - What?!

Unable to believe her ears, Anna looks at the Master with bewilderment, as suddenly a quiet laugh is heard. Astrid comes out of the far corner and smiles at her amazement.

Anna: - How? You?
Astrid: - Yes, the Master and I are old friends... I thought you'd guess... That is why we have achieved unprecedented progress in our time, inaccessible to others. And, besides... Didn't you get confused by the appearance of our Crown Prince?
Anna: - From where... how do you know?!...
Astrid, smiling: - Don't be scared. Many of us have clairvoyance, besides it is easy to develop... So your visions are quite real. So, you saw him?

Anna shakes her head.

Anna: - Yes... But what's so special about his appearance?
Astrid: - Well, - the Masters exchanged glances. - Actually, nothing at first glance. But his wisdom and knowledge that he possessed in the past - all this suggests that his family is very ancient. I think that he himself did not know about his origin. Blood issues are the most difficult issues in the world... But all members of his family from time immemorial was distinguished by extraordinary delicacy of sentiment, evident in many works of exalted art, and in the promotion of science, and then in kindness, in generosity, not on display, as well as the passion for music: in this family, music indulged with passion, preferring not recognized works and available to all of the beauty, but the complexity and sophistication...
Anna: But why then had a split in the Kingdom? If the Prince...
Astrid: - No, Crown Prince Albrecht has nothing to do with it. We don't know everything about it yet... But we know for sure that the reason why other cities like Edinburgh died and were destroyed is precisely because of the Great Conspiracy. And now their plan is to get control of Time. But first they need to awaken the Nameless One, whose name no one knows except the Supreme Master.
Anna: - Master's degree?
Edmund: Exactly. Previously, everyone believed that the power over Konigsberg belonged to the Crown Prince. But this was only the tip of the iceberg, in fact, the new Emperor had no special powers for a long time. All power over the country, and Konigsberg in particular, is concentrated in the hands of the powerful Magisterium - the Secret Order of the Guardians. Possessing unique knowledge in all fields of science and alchemy, they decided to take control of the whole world. Have you ever heard of Arnoldo de Villanova?
Astrid: - N-no, - the whole story made the girl's skin crawl... - I haven't heard.
Edmund: - This is a great scientist. Among Arnoldo's close acquaintances were the English monk Roger Bacon, author of The Mirror of Alchemy, and Albert the Great. I must say that de Villanova envied his Dominican colleague, who had much more opportunities for experiments. After completing his studies, Arnoldo travelled all over Europe, becoming a popular and expensive doctor. However, unusual methods and free conversations led to persecution by the church authorities. Strange potions, amulets, hypnosis - all this indicated a connection with evil spirits. In medicine, the scientist used gold as a universal medicine, not disdaining also to use the achievements of alchemy (mercury, salts, sulfur compounds). De Villanova's life was different from religious alchemists like Albert the Great, Roger Bacon or Thomas Aquinas. While teaching at the University of Paris, Arnoldo made such bold speeches that the Inquisition was alarmed. Speaking of alchemy, it is worth noting that the scientist is considered one of those who really managed to create the philosopher's stone. This is indicated in his treatise "The Great Rosary". Arnoldo claimed to have been able to convert lead into gold. After the scientist's death, the church decided to condemn him. Most of de Villanova's writings were burned... But in fact, there is indisputable evidence that Arnoldo did not die at all. And it is he who is the head of that very Order.
Anna: - My God... So that's what happened to Konigsberg...

Edmund nods affirmatively.

EDMUND: - Yes, Anna... It was he who gave the order to poison the Crown Prince... And thus make Edinburgh what you see now — a place where they could hide... But there is a legend that if a person appears who will not let the ritual of Eternity happen, he will be able to restore the city and return everything to its place as it should be.
Anna: - The Ritual of Eternity? And what is this?
Astrid: - This is a ritual that the Order of Six wishes to perform. And what Konigsberg is just a pathetic semblance of what the world will turn into after the Ritual...
Anna: - No!

The girl takes her head in shock. But it seems that Edmund's story makes a stunning impression not only on her. Elvira is also unable to take her eyes off the Master of Time. There was horror in her eyes.

Elvira: - Edmund, didn't anyone try to stop them?
Edmund: - There were attempts... But all in vain. The Magisterium skilfully manages the consciousness of people. Few people can resist him and what his members offer: power, money, fame, honour... Getting on this hook, no one can break off from it anymore. And their souls belong to the Order forever. But no one guesses that the Order's plan will soon be put into execution. The main thing for them is to conduct a Ritual of Transition, which is very difficult. To do this, they need to collect 8 amulets, 8 souls, 8 vices and the most ardent hearts of all time, whose power, combined together, will open the Gates of the Underworld. The One who Slept will wake up and, with the help of a Chronograph, will take control of Time.
Anna: - What a horror... But someone has to stop them!

The girl looks hopefully at Edmund. He shakes his head.

Edmund: Yes, but it's a big risk... And who would dare to do such a thing — to get into the den of Snakes?
Anna: - I am!

Edmund stares at Anna. But then he smiles and nods.

Edmund: - Yes, it's interesting... The first volunteer in the history of Konigsberg. Well, it's your choice... But just keep in mind - you will have to learn a lot ...
Anna: - Promise?!...

Action 5. The hour has come

A strong clap of thunder wakes him up, and Alex abruptly opens his eyes. Impenetrable darkness reigns around, and the silence is broken only by the howling of the wind outside the window and the noise of the trees. A flash of lightning illuminates the room for a moment, but then everything is plunged into darkness again. The young man turns over on his other side, trying to fall asleep, but suddenly he hears a strange rustling, similar to the sound of pages being turned over. He reaches for the light switch like… A bright flash of lightning lights up the room again, and he sees someone's figure bending over the table. Finally, Alex gropes with a trembling hand for the switch and turns on the light. The room is empty. A young man rubs his eyes – he will dream about it… Just in case, he goes to the door. It's locked from the inside. Weird… Approaching the table, he picks up a book. No, he probably wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. Alex moves the lamp to the table and opens it. It's a diary.

(date October 30, 1881)
"The stars have converged. Another lost puzzle was found today. The Order will be pleased. This girl is exactly what we were looking for. All seven artifacts have been collected, there are very few left... Another week and it will be over. The main thing is to keep the oath given to the Order. They're waiting. And then - we will all get a well-deserved reward."..

Alex: - Oh, my God. So, it's all true and this mansion... This house belonged to one of the Members of the Order. Just what kind of Order is this and what does the Crown Prince have to do with it?... These visions are becoming more and more realistic, as if... As if I myself was a participant in those events!

The young man gets to his feet, trying to collect his thoughts. After all, this is impossible... Although, once he read about the transmigration of souls. However, all this is nothing more than fiction... Isn't that right? He goes to the mirror on the wall and looks into it.

Alex: - I'm fine, I'm totally fine...

But then a ripple passes through the mirror. More surprised than frightened, the young man touches its surface... His hand passes through it like through a thin layer of water. Taking a deep breath, he takes a step forward...

***

Edmund: - And once again the bar, the jump, the kick... - The master claps his hands. - Hmm, yes. Looks like that's enough for today.
Astrid: - Looks like it? Have you decided to kill the poor child? - Irene approaches Anna and helps her up.
Anna: - Nothing, really, I'm fine, - trying to catch her breath, the girl stands in front of the Master. - Thanks for the lesson. But I still need to train...
Edmund: - Yes, but time is short. All Saints' Day is in three sunrises. It is on this day, at midnight...
Anna: - A ritual will be held... Yes, I know. Edmund, I feel like I can handle it...
Edmund: - Yes, but...

Here everyone hears some noise on the ground floor.

Astrid: - Quiet, someone is coming here!

Everyone started up, Anna immediately gets into a fighting position, as the door swings open and...

Elvira: - God, it can't be... This is...
Astrid: - Your Majesty...

Astrid grabs the table in shock. Anna just silently looks at the man standing in the doorway. His eyes are also fixed on her, riveting her to him like a magnet. More than in a dream, in reality Anna simply cannot resist his attraction. Approaching him, she only gently touches her hand to his chest.

Anna: - Are you real...
Alex: - Annabelle?... - he gently takes her hand in his. - How... How is this possible?
Anna: - But didn't you say that everything is possible, the main thing is to believe...

The Crown Prince raises an eyebrow in surprise. Strange... After all, in fact, they see each other for the first time in their lives, but both have the feeling that they haven't seen each other for many years and finally met... And it's so right, so natural...

Annabelle: - Ahem. In general, we are still here...
Elvira: - Yeah... If anyone explains what is going on here, it will be very nice.

Elvira looks ironically at the girl and the Crown Prince. Alex's impenetrable face made it impossible to tell what he was thinking, and Anna just shrugs her shoulders vaguely.

Astrid: - Most likely my mirrors are to blame for everything, - she looks thoughtfully at the drawings. - Your Highness, isn't that how you were transported here?
Alex: - Yes, but... I'm just afraid you're wrong. I'm... not exactly who you think I am... My name is Alex.

- what? - the friends exchange stunned glances. - How...?

Alex: - I don't understand anything myself... But for some reason it still seems to me that we have met before...
Annabelle: - Reincarnation... Edmund, you told me yourself what...
Edmund: - ... happens, yes. In rare cases, the river of time turns back and a person will have to return in order to finish what he did not finish in the past. And if he does not do this, then his soul will return to this world again and again ...
Alex: - What nonsense, - he looks at Edmund with a grin. But he met with a clear and calm gaze. "You're not serious, are you?"
Edmund: - Alas, no, Alex. I'm telling the truth. And it depends only on you whether you accept it or not... But now you have an even greater responsibility," the young man looks thoughtfully at the girl and the Crown Prince. His gaze makes them uncomfortable. - Such cases are extremely rare and if this happens, it means that the fate of the world is in your hands. For both of you are here precisely to fulfill one (and extremely important) mission.
Alex: - Wow, - he looks significantly at Anna. "So we're partners now, huh?"
Astrid: - This is not a joke, Alexander, - the Master shakes his head reproachfully. - Since Fate has pleased to awaken you, then you must accept it. Forget what happened before. It doesn't matter anymore. The past must be remembered as an edification in order to avoid the same mistakes in the future. And if you are given a second chance... You must use it for good. I hope you remember what happened last time?
Alex: - In general, not really. I hope you'll tell us," he looks inquiringly at Edmund. He nods.
Edmund: - Good. But I warn you - the past can cause pain. If you are ready...
Then close your eyes... I'll count to ten... On the count of ten, you'll fall asleep... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 your eyelids are getting heavier, 6, 7 you are uncontrollably sleepy, 8... 9... 10!

The Crown Prince looks at Anna with disapproval. She shrugs her shoulders.

Anna: - Don't remind me. I'm still sick...
Alex: - Well, you're just thinking about yourself... And what does it feel like to me, - the Crown Prince puts his hand to his lips. - Ugh, I won't take more champagne in my mouth! If you could find this Baron, he would answer for everything...
Edmund: - In general, you will have such an opportunity. The full moon is already the day after tomorrow. Moreover, instead of one saviour, we have two ...
Elvira: - Three! I have my own scores with him...
Anna: - That's just a mismatch. If the Baron shot you... Then you just can't be here!
Elvira: - Who said he shot me? Still, do not forget about the special material from which the Master's corsets are made. They are almost indestructible...
Anna: - Clearly... But I still can't understand, - the girl thoughtfully runs her hand over her corset. - What prompted the Master to form an alliance with the Order? Such a brilliant inventor and in the service of Mystics...
Astrid: - yes... In fact, he wasn't always like that. I remember the times when we were close friends...
Alex: - What?! That is, how?
Astrid (sadly): - Everything happened after the death of his wife — the most beautiful lady of Konigburg, who has a chiselled figure. Valerie has always been devoted to her husband and Master... But fate decided for them - Valerie died in childbirth... Bernard seemed to have lost his mind... Perhaps this was the reason for his entry into the Order. And now he's completely immersed in alchemy, hoping to turn back time and bring Valerie back to life ...
Alex: - So that's why he needed that corset that I saw in one of my dreams... The Crown Prince shuddered. - Horror...
Astrid: - But that's not all... - She looks at Edmund. He nods. - Anna, you need to know the truth, for your own good...

The girl looks at Astrid uncomprehendingly.

Anna: - What are you talking about?
Astrid: - My dear, Master Bernard is watching you for a reason... And it was not for nothing that his corset saved Elvira... He was supposed to save you, too. But you chose the window.
Anna: - What? Are you saying that the Master was trying to save me? What for?

Astrid approaches the girl. There is sympathy and tenderness in her eyes.

Astrid: - Everything is simpler than it seems. Honey, the Master is your father.
Anna: - WHAT?!

The girl retreats from Astrid in shock, turns to the Time Master. He nods.
Seeing her confusion, he approaches her.

Edmund: - It's hard to realize, but you really are the heiress of a Great Master... And the Crown Prince knows about it, doesn't he?

Anna turns to Albrecht. He nods.

Alex: - Yes... But my letter came too late... And the Baron managed to strike his blow.
Anna: - So, since I'm here, now he definitely won't give up...
Astrid: - yes... But this time there are three of you. Of course, now our chances are increasing... And we shouldn't waste any time. Besides, it's time to gather supporters.
Elvira: - Don't worry about that. There are still a decent number of rebels in the city who would not want to become the Sand of Time at all. In addition, there is the Eastern Quarter... True, Gypsies don't really trust strangers. But, I think, if you talk to their head...
Anna: - So, they are for the Crown Prince?

Anna looks at Elvira in surprise. She shakes her head vaguely.

Elvira: "Not really. Gypsies have never obeyed anyone. They have their own, separate world, it has always been so, and we respect their independence. But they have their own scores to settle with the Magisterium. There are never casualties in war... And that raid... The first one to suffer in that bombing was their Neighbourhood.
Alex: - My God...
Elvira: - That's why I think they will be happy to join us. But first... We have an important task. It will be necessary to get one very important artifact from the Imperial Treasury, and before these fanatics. And the entrance there is guarded by the most dangerous traps...
Anna (exchanging glances with Alex): - So, from now on, in more detail. What kind of artifact?
Astrid: - This is the key with which the Order decided to free up Time ...
Alex: - Yes, I read about it, - he points to the diary lying on the table. - The master was talking about the upcoming ritual. And, it seems, Ana... More precisely, you, Anna, have the role of a victim in it.
Anna: - What about? That's just not enough...

Elvira nods.

Elvira: - Yes, I heard about it. Seven amulets, seven souls have already been selected by him. There was only one left...
Anabel: - In that case, we need to be extremely careful. Mystics are extremely dangerous. Moreover, they have been waiting for this ritual for many years. But this year is special, because it is in it that the Parade of Planets is expected, coupled with the Great Opposition of Mars... And it is on the eve of All Saints' Day that Mars will enter the right phase in order to open the Gates of Time ...
- Horror, - everyone looked at each other. - But it will be worse than an atomic war...
Alex: - That's why we have to get ahead of them, - Alex (or is it Albrecht?) puts his hand on Anna's shoulder with a soothing gesture. - And we will do it!

Action 6. Awakening

Before they set off, Anna and Alex decide to find his Palace... On Astrid's advice, wearing raincoats and hiding their faces under hoods, they walk along the road in complete silence for a long time, and in the silence that reigns, you can hear the crunch of gravel under their feet. The way to Upper Konigburg turns out to be not at all easy, because they have to go through the slums of the Lower City ...

Annabelle: - How quiet it is around. It wasn't like this here before, was it?
Albrecht: - Yes, it's all very strange. However, I have only been to Nizhny Twyburg once, when the fair was held... But I will never forget the noise of cars, factories and soot, from which a thin layer of soot remains on clothes ...
Annabelle: - Yes, it's hard to imagine...

Then the fog began to recede, and in the light of an overcast day they see something that makes everything inside cold. The houses that look like dark skeletons surrounding them are literally burned out from the inside. All this suggests the idea of a civil war. But the most eerie sight opens their eyes when they approach the building in which, judging by the sign, the hospital used to be located. And now only a part of the brick wall and a door remain of it... And behind it... The girl turns away, burying her face in the Crown Prince's chest. He hugs her, but he himself becomes creepy. They see a mountain of melted bricks and rebar, among which the imprints of bodies burned on the ground are visible... There is nothing, just silhouettes... As in reality, they hear sirens and screams of people... Stepping among the rubble of bricks, the Crown Prince sees a lonely teddy bear. Carefully taking it in his hands, he presses the toy to his chest.

The Palace itself has also not been preserved. It is literally wiped off the face of the earth, only the foundation overgrown with trees indicates the presence of a monumental structure here... Suddenly they hear footsteps behind them.

Marin: - Are you the Crown Prince?

Turning around, the young people see a young girl in a shabby overalls. She looks at Alex intently. He nods.

Marin: - So, they didn't lie to us. You're definitely back...

Annabelle: - Who... Who are you? I haven't seen you here before...
Marin: - I'm Marin... And you couldn't see us. We live down in the shelters.
Annabelle: - In shelters?
The pale skin of the girl shows that she spent a lot of time without the sun.

Albrecht: - Marin, tell me what happened here... while we were gone?

The girl shrugs her shoulders.

Marin: - As you can see — nothing good... And why be surprised, the government has never cared about its residents...

After looking contemptuously at the Crown Prince, the girl turns away with the intention of leaving, but Anabel stops her.
Annabelle: - Please, Marin. If you don't mind... Me and Alex...
Marin: - Alex? That is?
Albrecht: - We're not from the past, Marin... It's all difficult to explain...
Marin: - Oh, I've heard of that. Wow! So that's why you don't remember anything. Then everything is clear. Well, what can I tell you? I myself know about it only from the stories of my great-grandfather. He served at the factory... When this raid started.
Annabelle: - A raid?
Marin: - yes... The day before, a rumour spread about the death of the Crown Prince. No one, of course, believed it at first... But then everyone went crazy. The uprising began, but people were unprepared, acted spontaneously, without a clear plan of action. Having seized the weapons depot, everyone moved to Upper Edinburgh. The Palace was the first to be blown up and destroyed. And then the houses of the nobility. The robbery began. But no one was ready to resist... And at night, when the whole city was still asleep, there was a raid. Then the hospital was destroyed. And then everything blew up: the reservoir, schools, hospitals...
Annabelle: - My God, - the girl looked at Albrecht. He looks at the city as if petrified. - Alex... Albrecht...

Approaching him, the girl takes his hand.

Albrecht: - I'm... sorry, Anna, I don't know what to say...
Annabelle: - No need... Say nothing. Marin, can I walk you out?

Anna looks at the girl questioningly. She shakes her head negatively.

Marin: - Nope. I myself. They're waiting for me... at home. Yes, and you will hurry up. It's going to get dark soon, and it's very dangerous here at night... But I would like to wish you good luck. And also..." she looks at the Crown Prince. - I'm glad you're back. And others are also happy. However, you are better than the Guards of the Magisterium.
Waving her hand at them, the girl disappears into the fog. Anabel looks at Albrecht.

Annabelle: - Come on, let's go back to the others.

Have you ever flown a balloon? That's for sure - this is not forgotten! Going to the window, Annabelle looks at the city below.

Annabelle: - There are just no words! Airplanes are also, of course, not bad. But the balloon...
Albrecht: - Yes, but... I can't forget what I saw. These people... Look at Thomas and Imia. Because of the chaos that has occurred, they have lost people dear to them. And what can we say about the hospital that we saw? A hospital full of homeless women and children. What do... have they done something?
Annabelle (softly): - Albrecht, - the girl takes the man's hand in hers. - Yes, that was all. But that's just the past. We can't know what would have happened... But it is in our power to fix the future.
Albrecht: - Do you really believe that? I heard what people were saying when we were in that pub before the flight. They think that I abandoned them then...
Annabelle: - What does it matter what they say. The main thing is that you're back... You have heard them, which means that your heart is close to your people. And I really believe that the future that has not yet come, we can make it a little brighter.

Suddenly, the events of that other life in the real world flashed before her eyes, like black and white photographs. In a world mired in the same sins that brought Edinburgh to the edge of the abyss...

Annabelle: - You know, it's probably part of human nature to judge, but we forget to ask ourselves — do we have the right to judge a person only by his cover? After all, there are reasons for everything in the world... And it is very difficult when you are not understood. And I understand that, believe me... It's unbearably hard to be an outcast. And days, months and years do not change this. Therefore, if you do not fight, do not go further by force, if you give up... Then fear comes first, fear gives birth to anger, anger is replaced by hatred, and hatred is the key to despair. That is why it is so important that in a moment of fear and loneliness there is someone who will support you and will not let you embark on the path that will lead you to losing yourself.
Albrecht: - You sound like... like you...

Annabelle shrugs vaguely and decides to change the subject.

Annabelle: - Let's not talk about sad things. Everything is in our hands. Sooner or later we all come across who we are. Or with who we should become. And I'm sure His Highness will surprise us again.

Here their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of Elvira.

Elvira: - Looks like we're coming... Better get ready, no one knows what awaits us there, in the dungeon...

The forest meets the heroes with darkness and cold. Everything is strange — but most of all - the raindrops that have not reached the ground, frozen... The stopped time here is felt with even greater force. Walking along a barely noticeable path, travellers really do not know what awaits us ahead, and the silence reigning around suggests gloomy thoughts. It was as if the whole world was waiting for something...

Suddenly Astrid notices a dark passage ahead, going deep into the earth. She points it out to Edmund, who nods. Taking lanterns with them, the friends begin their descent into the unknown. What at first everyone takes for a grotto turns out to be a large dungeon. A steep staircase made of dark stone goes straight into the depths of the earth, from where it blows damp. Finally, when the descent is completed, the travellers see that they are in a long corridor, the end of which is lost in darkness.

Astrid: - You'll have to go at random. Remember, these dungeons stretch all over Edinburgh and who knows what might be hidden in these mazes. So watch your every move if you don't want to end up like some before us...

The master lights up the opposite wall with a lantern, and everyone retreats in horror when they see the skeleton nailed to it. Yes, it looks like these dungeons really won't let them relax.

Annabelle: - Yeah, it's a fun place... - having switched on a pre-prepared lantern, the girl looks back at Albrecht. - Somehow, I don't like all this...
Albrecht: - I thought it was hard to scare you. Ready for an adventure? Ehh..
Annabelle: - Alas, it's not so easy to read my thoughts. You have an interesting gift.
Albrecht: - A gift? - the young man is clearly amazed. - Did I miss something?
Annabelle: - Oh, yes, I completely forgot that you haven't heard the legend...
Albrecht: - This is the third time you've promised to tell me, Mademoiselle...

The prince laughs, but the girl just shrugs.

Annabelle: - Probably because I don't want to deprive myself of your company, Sire... Oh well... There is a prophecy for every person who comes to Edinburgh...
Albrecht: - A prophecy?

There is genuine interest in Albrecht's voice and the girl nods without turning around.

Annabelle: - Yeah. As Master Edmund explained, it's so easy for no one to get to Edinburgh, an ordinary person won't even notice it. But not the Wanderer... And it is possible to find out by a special gift that each of us has. I think you already know yours...
Albrecht: - And what is your gift? Probably something special ...
Annabelle: - Mmm, you can say that my gift only complements yours. I see the future...
Albrecht: - Really? Like Nostradamus, or what? So that's what happened back at Headquarters... How long has it been since you started?

Albrecht looks at the girl with irony. But she's not laughing. The scene is changing. Memories from the past: - Hey, look, there she is! Let's run!

Shaking her head, the girl drives away the painful memories.

Annabelle: - A long time ago... But that's in the past.
Albrecht: - And about me... do you see anything?
Annabelle: - No... In this we are even.

Trying not to look at Albrecht, the girl glances at the floor for the first time and stops abruptly.

Albrecht: - Annabelle, what... - The young man looks at her warily.
Annabelle: - Guys, stop!
Astrid: - Anna, what's the matter?

Elvira excitedly takes a step back, but Annabelle warningly holds out her hand.

Annabelle: - Stay where you are.
Elvira (irritably): - What's going on? Any premonitions again? We'll never get to the treasury that way..
Annabelle: - No, don't move. Look at the floor, do you see these plates? Do you think they are just lying here for beauty?

And in fact, the floor, like a chessboard, is all lined with white-brown stone slabs. And among them, rusty metal plates stand out, one of which was almost stepped on by Sarin.

Astrid: - In that case... It's worth checking out.

Nodding, Annabelle opens the bag and pulls out a golden oval from it. She puts it on her palm, and it opens up, turning into a small insect, like a wasp. Annabelle runs her finger along its back, thereby switching it to exploration mode. Buzzing, it takes off from her palm and flies to the plate. Suddenly she starts to sway, and then falls down. A splash is heard. Carefully, so as not to stumble, Astrid comes closer and, taking out a rope, lowers one end of it into the water. Everyone hears the hiss.

Astrid: - Annabelle is right. Acid, and of a very high consistency.
Albrecht: - So, - the Crown Prince looks at the girl with interest. - It seems we have a medium...
Anabel: - Albrecht, stop it. Better watch your step. I didn't want to lose you in this incarnation.

Looking reproachfully at the young man, Anabel carefully steps over the stove. Albrecht follows her. Finally, when the dangerous section is overcome, everyone sighs with relief.

Elvira: - Well, that's it... Now you can relax...
Elvira straightens a stray strand and looks at Edmund. Anabel had noticed long ago that she liked him. And, as often happens, the scientist clearly does not notice the signs that she sends him. But it seems that the girl does not lose hope. Anabel smiles and approaches her.

Annabelle: - It is unlikely that we will be able to relax in this maze. But yes, the game is worth the candle.
Elvira: - What maze? After all, we have been walking along a smooth corridor for an hour.

Annabelle nods and, switching the flashlight to the distant illumination, shows the fork ahead.

Elvira: - Oh, this maze. Well, yes, of course...
Edmund: - So, where to now?

Edmund looks at Anna questioningly. Albrecht gives the girl a map and she unfolds it and points to the right corridor.

Annabelle: - However, it was possible to turn left, but there is a blockage. Therefore, it is better to pass here. This corridor is shorter, after which we will go out into a large gallery with many branches. There you will need to find the one in front of which there will be a triangle... And already he will lead us to the Vault.
Albrecht: - Let's not waste time.

Edmund takes the lantern. But then Anabel's attention is attracted by some strange hieroglyph depicted on the map next to this corridor.

Annabelle: - What could it mean?
Albrecht: - What are you talking about?
Annabelle: - Do you understand these signs?
Albrecht: - Well, for some time since I was awakened, - he looks significantly at the girl, but she does not allow herself to be confused. - The old knowledge and skills have also awakened in me.
Annabelle: - Hmm, in that case, what?...

Then a wild scream comes from the corridor. Everyone raises their heads at the same time. Anabel grabs a flashlight and runs into the hallway.

Annabelle: - Master? Edmund, my God...

The master is lying face down, holding his leg, and a scarlet stain is spreading under his hand. Zarina takes a step towards him, but Albrecht stops her.

Elvira: - But I have to help him, - the girl looks angrily at the Crown Prince. - Let me go!
Albrecht: - No, if you value your life, - he nods to Anabel and she, taking out a WASP, pushes her forward into the darkness of the corridor. - Look.

Immediately, with a whistling sound, small steel discs fly out of the wall and disappear into the holes opposite. The sight of them makes Zarina recoil.

Elvira: - What to do, he will bleed out...
Annabelle: - I'll go to him. And then I'll turn off the system. There is a lever at the end of the corridor. Give me a first aid kit.

Slowly, the girl lies down on the floor and, as her Master taught her, crawls to him like a plast and carefully kneels next to Edmund. He's obviously unconscious from blood loss. Biting her lip, the girl takes out a pair of scissors and, quickly cutting his trouser leg, sees a deep cut from which blood gushes. I have to remember everything she knew about dressing the wounded when she took medical training courses. Taking out a tourniquet, the girl pulls his leg at the hip and the blood immediately stops. Then she quickly puts the man on his back, and treats the leg as best she can with the strongest antiseptic and the healing solution that Astrid gave her, applying a gauze bandage and fixing it all with a bandage. After removing the tourniquet, Anabel notices that the blood stops and the Master, although pale, still begins to breathe more evenly.

Annabelle: - Everything is fine, he will live, - the girl wipes the sweat from her forehead and looks at her friends with a smile. Zarina exhales with relief and covers her face with her hands. - Wait for me. I am now...

Safely past the dangerous stretch of the way, Anabel gets to the end of the corridor and carefully gets to her feet. Finding a lever in the shape of a six-pointed star, he turns it and, after making sure that the system has really turned off, looks at his friends.

Annabelle: - That's it, the way is clear. I'm waiting for you here.

After a halt, where it was unanimously decided to leave Zarina and Edmund to wait for the group to return at the fork, the friends, this time without incident, get to a small door.

Astrid: - To be honest, I was expecting something more...
Annabelle: - Let's not judge a book by its cover, - the girl looks questioningly at Albrecht. - Your move, Your Highness...
Albrecht: - As I understand it, the honour of the discoverer is given to me, - the young man approaches the door. - I hasten to please you — there is no lock here. Unless...

He thinks for a moment, then presses the third stone to the right of the door. There is a screeching sound, and the door swings open. But at the same moment, such icy air blows on them that everyone takes their breath away. Flashlights blink and go out.

Annabelle: - Albrecht!
Albrecht: - I'm here, - feeling his hand in hers, the girl calms down a little.
Annabelle: - I'm glad...
Albrecht: - Really? There is irony in the Prince's voice, but the girl does not attach importance to it. However, it's one thing to see this in a movie, on TV, when you're sitting at the screen in a warm blanket and with a cup of tea in your hands, and it's another to actually get lost in underground labyrinths. It seems that the darkness is pressing down on you, squeezing you in a vice. And, in addition, this chilling cold... But here everything is illuminated by a lit torch.

Astrid: - I've always said that you can't rely on technology in everything. Shall we go? It's time to end this.

Entering the vault, Anabel blinks in amazement. She was ready for anything—for big chests with everything in the world, for mountains of coins, even for a dragon... But not to the fact that the storage will be completely empty.

Astrid: - Ahem. Which is to be expected...
Albrecht: - But... I don't understand. When my father (in the past) took me with him, I remember a whole warehouse of weapons, stocks, even gold bars...
Annabelle: - Mmm, - the girl walks thoughtfully through the hall. - I must say that this dungeon nevertheless inspires respect: brick walls, arched ceiling... It can be seen that it was created for centuries. But what... - Suddenly the girl stumbles over something and falls. - Ah!
Albrecht: - Anabel, are you okay?

Albrecht helps the girl up. Friends look at the ground and see a small hatch right in the floor. There is also no lock on it, but someone's palm print is left in the very center. Albrecht puts his hand to this print, and immediately the hatch slides aside, and an iron spiral staircase is found at the bottom...

Astrid: - That's what I understand... I take all my words back. It seems to me, we hit the jackpot, - approaching the shelf, she picks up a weighty bar of gold. - Probably it is possible to rebuild a couple of the same Edinburgh, and there will still be...

Albrecht's face does not show his feelings, although it seems that he is as stunned as she is.

Albrecht: - Okay, don't forget what we're here for, - he, not looking at his friends, goes forward, throwing over his shoulder: - We'll split up. It will be easier to find the artifact this way.
Annabelle: - Yes, of course, - stepping aside, the girl walks thoughtfully between the shelves. The first impression flutters, and she begins to understand Albrecht. Meanwhile, as all this wealth was stored underground, the city was in poverty... And all this technique, it seemed to shout: look how strong I am, I'm not afraid of anyone! But did it help? Hardly...

Soon all these shelves merge into a monotonous endless maze. But suddenly Anabel sees some light ahead. It falls from somewhere above, illuminating the stone pedestal on which... The Chronometer is lying there. Slowly, as if in a dream, the girl approaches him and picks him up.

Astrid: - Anabel? Anabel, you...

As if through a column of water, the girl hears Albrecht's excited voice.

Albrecht: - What... What are you doing? Stop!

But the girl doesn't care. This is clearly something much stronger than her. And it orders her: "Read!" Strange symbols appear on the clock, as if burning with fire... The girl closes her eyes....

Albrecht: - Annabelle, no!!!

The Crown Prince snatches the Chronometer from her hands. The obsession immediately recedes, a terrible convulsion passes through the girl's body.

Albrecht: - Annabelle, can you hear me?

By force of will, the girl forces her body to obey again. Opening her eyes, she sees Albrecht's agitated face, intently peering at her.

Annabelle: - Albrecht... what... - she sees Astrid running up. There was horror in her eyes. - What?...
Albrecht: - Nothing, everything is already over, - in his arms, the chill that shakes her gradually passes. - I'm sorry, I should have warned you not to touch the Chronometer.
Annabelle: - But... I don't understand...
Astrid: - This Chronometer will give the one who reads the words of the Command the power of Time, but it's a trap, - Astrid looks at her watch with apprehension. - It is only necessary to say the words out loud, as the one who does it will become a part of it himself. And then Chaos will reign on Earth, because the Past, Present and Future will merge together. Only a true Guardian of Time can stop it.

Only then does Annabelle realize WHAT she just almost did... The girl looks at Albrecht with gratitude.

Annabelle: - Thank you... If you hadn't stopped me...
Albrecht: - You're welcome. Just be careful.

The Crown Prince smiles. The girl can't help but smile back, his smile is so contagious, like a ray of sunshine illuminating everything around...

Action 7. Dawn

Albrecht wraps the Chronometer in a black light-proof cloth and puts it in his backpack. Anabel exhales in relief and looks at Astrid. And yet they managed...

Astrid: - It's time to go back, Zarina and Edmund are probably restless, - Astrid throws a backpack with gold bars on her shoulders.
Albrecht (with a smile): - Yes, we need to pay off the rebels. Alas, no one is doing anything for free now.

Annabelle nods. After closing the door, they light flashlights... How suddenly they hear some noise from the gallery. Excitedly quickening their pace, the friends leave the corridor...

Baron: - Oh, finally, here are our tomb robbers, - the Baron claps his hands. - Bravo, bravissimo!

Annabelle: - You...

The Baron doesn't let her finish. He looked them over and grinned.

Baron: - Probably, you are interested in the fate of your friends. Don't worry about them. We escorted them to places very remote... But now they won't get in the way.

Annabelle makes a sound like a growl and looks at the Baron with hatred.

Annabelle: - You... - she jerked, wanting to rush forward, but the guards immediately pointed their machine guns at her. - Murderers!

Baron: - Hmm, I think, in order to avoid big sacrifices, you will still act more prudently ... - the Baron's grin becomes even wider. - Isn't that right, Mademoiselle Annabelle?
Annabelle: - We'll see about that.
BARON: - Oh, how familiar it is... But your life will still be useful to me. Although you can't save everyone, no matter how much you'd like to.

He snaps his fingers. Shot. The girl's legs become wadded, as if they grow to the ground, they do not obey. As if in slow motion, Annabelle sees Astrid sagging, holding her side. The guards aim their weapons at the woman, but the Baron stops them with his hand.

Baron: - So, choose. Give away the Chronograph and your friends will live. Believe me, I don't want to shed innocent blood at all...
Albrecht: - You're late, - the Crown Prince shakes his head, hatred and disgust frozen in his eyes. - Annabelle has already activated the Chronometer, and now it is useless... For you.
Baron: - Really? - The Baron looks haughtily at the Crown Prince. - Well, thank you, Your Majesty. The more valuable your friend has become to us. But the choice is still yours, madam...

Annabelle looks at the crouching Astrid and, imperceptibly, squeezes Albrecht's hand. He looks at her blankly.

Annabelle: - Go ahead. Plan B.

After looking into his amber eyes once more, the girl unclenches her hand, simultaneously snatching several wasps from her bag and hurling them at the Guards, who are screaming, waving their arms, in complete prostration, clouded with Sleeping Powder.

Annabelle: - Albrecht, grab Astrid and run. I'll catch up with you...
Albrecht: - But...

Then Annabelle notices the Baron approaching. Pushing the Prince away, she feels the Baron grabbing her by the waist and pulling her to him.

Baron: - Well done, girl. However, it would be more correct to give me the Chronometer, then... he pulls out his gun. - You could be a Savior...
Annabelle: - No!

The girl lunges forward and knocks the weapon out of his hands. Albrecht picks up the gun, pointing it at the Baron. He laughs and takes out a syringe.

BARON: - Oh, it's not worth it, my dear... - suddenly something strongly pricked the girl in the neck. The world began to fade before her eyes. - We always win. Keep in mind, for the future.

... A dark hall full of vague images. Annabelle looks around as if in a dream, she is not at all surprised by the people gathered around in masks and black raincoats. She doesn't care about what's going on. A man in a scarlet robe steps into the centre of the circle. His face is also hidden under a mask.

Head of the Order: - Come out and stand next to me.

Annabelle obeys his will and does what he orders her to do. In front of her is an elevation on which a Chronometer lies and there are 8 vessels.

The head of the Order: - Evadit Aeternum! - raising his hands up, the Head of the Order looks around at everyone. - Let what is destined to happen...

He approaches the girl and points to the Chronometer.

Head of the Order: - It's time to change the course of time...

He claps his hands and one of the Keepers takes the Chronometer and hands it to her.

The Masked Man: - There is another choice.

The voice that suddenly rang out seems vaguely familiar to the girl. And, at the same time, two Keepers come forward and take off their masks. A tear slides down the girl's cheek.

Annabelle: - Albrecht... - the movements are difficult, but she still forces herself to stretch out her hand. - You're alive.

Their hands touch, and the girl seems to wake up from a terrible nightmare. Albrecht embraces her, and a bright light seems to flash in her, giving her strength... And at that moment something extraordinary happens. Like a discharge current... Annabelle realizes in an instant that she hears him, hears all his thoughts, knows all his feelings. It's like they become one for a moment... Here everyone hears a rumble, and then an explosion is heard and the earth shudders violently. The Keepers look at each other in confusion, but the Head of the Order raises his hand.

Head of the Order: - It looks like you've played a gambit. Oh, what heroism - to blow up the headquarters. But you didn't take into account the main thing, my friend. Don't underestimate the power of Time, Your Highness." He removes his mask. "But the wasp idea wasn't so bad, was it?"
Albrecht: - Baron Arnoldo de Villanova, - the Crown Prince looks at the Magister with anger. - So, I knew ...
Head of the Order: - What a touching reunion. But I'm afraid you can't change what is predetermined. Although I admit, you surprised me...

Albrecht squeezes Annabelle's hand even harder. Her eyes widen. She... reads it! And she sees something that makes her go cold. In an instant, understanding comes to her. So that's what it's all about... There are only a few minutes
left...
Albrecht: - What are you talking about?

Albrecht, not noticing anything, warily looks at the Baron.

The head of the Order: - Oh, so you don't know, - his look reflects mock sympathy. - It's a pity... But it's even for the best...

One more second… And here he is in her arms… At this moment, the girl feels a blow in the back and smiles through tears, seeing Albrecht's surprised eyes… The world around explodes with a flash of pain.

Albrecht: - Annabelle... - the girl feels the Crown Prince bending over her. But the pain is so strong that Annabelle almost loses consciousness, balancing on the verge of sleep and reality... Overcoming her, the girl touches his cheek.
Annabelle: - Albrecht... you... Must... Finish... this...
Albrecht: - What? - the girl feels how the young man presses her to him. - Annabelle... I'm not...
Annabelle: - You have to... I didn't tell you... I'm sorry, - a smile touches her lips. - Thank you... For giving me this world. And love.

The Crown Prince wants to say something, but the girl touches his lips with her fingertips.

Annabelle: - No, listen... You should know. A prophecy... It's not about me. It's about the true Guardian of the Times. About you...
Albrecht: - What? But...
Annabelle: - ... Go ahead. You still have so much to give to people. I believe in you. Remember... this.

Gathering all her strength, the girl rises and manages to whisper to him the cherished words of command. But then something flares up in her and goes out. Her head falls limply on the Crown Prince's chest...

Astrid, throwing back her hood: - Albrecht...

An elderly woman looks at the young man with sympathy. But he doesn't seem to hear her. Annabelle? What is she doing? She rushed to him, and he instinctively hugged her. After a moment, a strange smile appeared on her face. The tension released her, and she somehow went limp in his arms. If he hadn't been holding her, she would have fallen. He didn't understand what was happening, raised his hand to remove a lock of hair from her face and then he sees ... his eyes widened with horror, he looks at his hand and can't believe it…

Albrecht: - Noooooooooo!

His cry echoes in the silence of the hall. He doesn't care about anyone. He looks at Annabelle, at her closed eyes, at the smile frozen on her pale face. Albrecht hugs her to him and kneels down. A few minutes had passed since she hugged him, and only now it became clear that something unforeseen and terrible had happened.

Magister: - Oops, - he lowers the gun. - I'm sorry, but I had to stop this circus...

De Villanova lets out a short laugh.

The head of the Order: - Well, then, the stories about the Halves do not lie... There is a huge strength in their reunion. They may at first glance be completely different from each other, even co-ordinally different, but together they are one, a huge force... As you understand, I could not allow this. Moreover, what is to be cannot be avoided, you will not escape from fate. And we will get the missing puzzle one way or another...

Pale as a sheet, the young man puts the girl on the floor and turns to the Master. His eyes blaze with wild hatred.

Albrecht: - «Sagre diem. Benedicite»!

His voice sounds like a thunderclap. And at the same moment, the hands on the clock begin to spin wildly. A thunderclap is heard. And then... sand is pouring out of the clock. Together with the wind that came from nowhere, it creates a kind of tornado.

Head of the Order: - The moment that defines eternity! - De Villanova spreads his arms, and his half-crazed gaze glazes over. - Come, oh, Great Power! The Hour Has come...

The sandy river rushes to the Magister, enveloping him in a dense veil. Gasping, Albrecht covers his face with his hands. The throat mercilessly burns and stings from the caustic sand. A wild scream is heard, which abruptly stops. And, at the same time, the tornado suddenly slows down until it disappears completely. Clearing her throat, Astrid gets to her feet and looks around. The Keepers disappeared as if they had never existed. The girl approaches the young man, but he just looks at Anabel in silence.

Astrid: - Albrecht, me... I am so sorry. Believe me, I know... how you feel.
Albrecht: - Astrid, remember, Zarina told me about her talisman... Perhaps...

The elderly woman shakes her head sadly.

Astrid: - No, he has already lost all his power. After all, he saved us then and brought us here. But we really need to leave. The building is about to collapse.

In fact, there is another strong explosion...

Astrid: - Albrecht, listen, - the Master puts his hand on his shoulder. - Remember what it's all about... She believed it. And we have to finish what we started.

Picking up the Chronometer, she puts it on the pedestal.

Astrid: - Come on, Albrecht, we need to get rid of him, once and for all... Seal the Gates of Time!

However, she doesn't like her friend's look at all. He looks at the Chronometer as if fascinated, as if he did not hear her words. Astrid comes closer.

Astrid: - Albrecht, come on. We need to get out of here.
Albrecht: - I... can't. Astrid, just think, because with it you can...
Astrid: - No! Albrecht, you're wrong. You know it's evil! That's what the Master was talking about – it's part of the temptation. Don't let him take you...
Albrecht: - I'm sorry, I'm really, really sorry... He pulls out a revolver and points it at Astrid. - Very...
Astrid: - Oh, that's how it is... So, all these big words about healing with Love, about the mission, turned out to be in fact an ordinary lie... Take it, because he is more important to you than anything in the world. If that's your choice, then...

Turning around and not looking at him, Astrid goes to the exit, as she hears a shot behind her. Turning sharply, she sees the Crown Prince holding a pistol, but the pedestal is empty, only small parts of the Chronometer fly in different directions...

People who have come out of their houses squint their eyes from the bright light of the risen sun. The night ended and dawn came.

Elvira: - Astrid, - running up to her friends, the girl hugs them. - I knew, I knew that you could do it, - the girl smiles, looking at Albrecht standing in the distance. Crossing his arms over his chest, he silently looks at the sky, where the sunrise is red. "Bravo, Your Highness! And where... Where is Anna? More precisely, Anabel...
Astrid: - She is... She's not with us anymore...
Elvira: - What?! How could this happen? - The girl looks at Astrid, stunned.
Astrid: - Magister. He...
Elvira: - What? Bastard... Oh, if I could get him...
Astrid: - Alas, as far as I know, the rising Time Tornado swallowed him up without a trace... So, we are unlikely to hear about him again...

Elvira shakes her head. Approaching the young man, she puts her hand on his shoulder.
Elvira: - Albrecht, I'm sorry...
Albrecht: - It's not worth it...

The Crown Prince looks away. Suddenly, the sound of someone's footsteps is heard behind.

The Voice: - Elvira... - a voice sounded nearby makes friends look around.
Elvira: - Edmund! - not believing her eyes, the girl hugs her lover. - So you're alive!
Edmund: - Yes, as you can see. True, I almost lost one limb, but in the new hospital I was quickly put on my feet!
Astrid: - Well, at least someone is doing well, - she smiles sadly and looks at Albrecht. "Well, Your Highness... Anyway, the night is over, dawn has come. But we all have the main question – are you with us?

Adele: - Alex, finally, - woman, who suddenly ran out of the car, hugs the stunned young man. - Vlad and I almost went crazy. Where have you been? The fog confused all the plans... A strange city, was it not restored after the Second World War, or what? Brrr... Let's go quickly, they've been waiting for us...
Albrecht: - Adele, I... - Albrecht looks around. The risen sun illuminates the city with golden light. - I'm not going.
Adele: - What? That is, how? But... What about the agency? What am I going to tell them?

The young man shrugs his shoulders.

Albrecht: - I don't know... Come up with something.
Adele: - But Alex...
Albrecht: - An interesting city, - not listening to her, the Crown Prince crosses his arms over his chest. - It seems that we still have a lot to do...
Astrid: - Nothing, we are not in the first. In the City of Masters, this has already happened ...
Albrecht: - So, it's not worth wasting time...

The emperor kneels and Bishop puts a royal crown on his head.

Bishop: - New Times Are Coming. May your path be blessed.

Sighing, Albrecht turns to the subjects gathered below, who respond to him with a standing ovation. Holding out his hand, he gestures for them to calm down...

Albrecht: - This victory belongs to all of us. Let's build this new universe together, so that from now on Konigsberg will be an example of peace and prosperity. And, together, we will fill the whole world with the inventions of our Masters!

His words are drowned in cheers, and hundreds of white pigeons fly into the sky... The country has not known such a holiday for a long time! People all over the city are singing and dancing. Going out on the balcony, the Prince watches from afar the gaiety reigning below. The newly rebuilt palace, however, does not impress with the former splendour of the Baroque, but its strict Gothic appearance is quite consistent with the new architecture of Edinburgh. Suddenly he hears footsteps behind him.

Albrecht: - Edmund, why aren't you downstairs?
Master of Time: - I could ask you the same thing, Your Majesty, - Edmund looks at the Emperor. His gaze, however, is still directed forward, where the sky is lit up by thousands of fireworks. - But I won't.
Albrecht nods: - Thank you...

Suddenly a loud cawing is heard from above. The emperor raises his head and sees a large black raven, which swoops down sharply, throwing a bundle into his hands.

Master of Time: - What for? - Edmund, looking at Albrecht in disbelief. He unfolds the note attached to it and reads: "You know what to do with it" Master.

Edmund: - Master Bernard? What else for... By the way, what's in the package?

The Crown Prince opens the package, and an hourglass pendant falls into his palm.

- New Chronometer! - Albrecht looks at the raven sitting on the ledge in amazement. He bows his head and, with a shrill croak, soars into the sky...

The epilogue.

Morning. The alarm clock rings. With a dissatisfied stretch, the girl throws her cell phone on the floor. Without ceasing to ring, he forces her to open her eyes.

Anna: - Shut up already...

Rolling over on her back, Anna rubs her eyes with her hands. I'll dream about it... Getting out of bed, she goes to the shower. But the dream still does not get out of her head. She feels that she will not forget this city. She remembers the words of the Master: "Evadit Aeternum" - "The moment that defines Eternity.".. Well, he was right. We are the creators of our reality. And, even if the manuscript of our life has already been written, but in rare cases, nevertheless, we are given a chance to make some corrections to it. And the sooner we realize this, the more we can change. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. It's strange, it feels like she's been sleeping for a thousand years, or even more, and suddenly woke up. Looking around, she saw the world as she had never seen it before. It was new, strange, inexplicable...

Dressed in her favourite jeans and a black jacket, Anna throws a bag over her shoulder and leaves the house. She doesn't know what lies ahead. But there are so many unusual things in the world, so many secrets and secrets that you want to reveal... Summer is blooming all around - her favourite time of the year. She smiles happily, when suddenly, in the grass, she hears a strange ticking. Reaching out, she takes out an antique hourglass...

Anna: - Well, the adventures begin! - turns them over. And then he feels a touch.

The girl turns around with a smile.

Anna: - What took you so long?

Albrecht smiles.

Albrecht: - You can't wait anymore...
Annabelle: - Who would say, - the girl laughs, and the young people hug.
Albrecht: - Ready?
Annabelle: - To what? - the girl looks at the Crown Prince in bewilderment. He smiles.
Albrecht: - Do you believe me?
Annabelle: - What?
Albrecht: - Do you trust me?
The girl nods, and the Crown Prince takes her hand.
Albrecht: - Hold on tight and count to ten...

A moment... and they dissolve into a shining vortex..
